Music was, in its own way, a bit like math.
One man, one piano, eighty-eight keys. Seven ivory and five ebony to an octave. Seven and one fourth octaves to a keyboard. Chords and melodies their own type of equation, scales, in their way, like counting.
But math alone couldn’t create music. Math couldn’t explain away that glowing quality that no amount of skill alone could attain. Math couldn’t explain why once upon a time, unnumbered years ago in a sunlit garden, two had together made a whole.
Or why now, when only one remained, it amounted to nothing.
