While we're waiting

Let's talk about how the writing went for you, and how much you look forward to seeing the remix of your fic, and seeing what others think of your remix!

I was so lucky with the writer assigned to me, remixers. I was assigned a writer who qualified in my top priority fandom, and they had even written my favorite pairing.

Even better, it was someone who has a very different style from me, so it was easy for me to see how I would have written the story differently if I had written it first. I'm very excited to see what my remixee thinks, and what other readers think, and I hope my take on the story is different enough to be interesting, but not so different that it seems antagonistic.

When I first saw the fics, I thought yay! Many to choose from, and not so long they will be too time consuming to read. Then when I had read them, I felt a moment of stomach churning dread - would I have to default? None of the fics were anything I would have written, or felt at all inspired to write at that moment.

But I decided to sleep on it, and to read some of the excellent remix meta linked from this comm, and that's when I realized that I was unusually lucky. I felt that having such a different style from my remixee gave me a lot of creative freedom and maneuvering room, because there was no question that I would pick a very different way to tell the story, both in terms of style and characterization.

I spent a couple of weeks plotting my story out, and thinking of phrasing, and after that procrastinating a lot before getting to the actual writing. I wish I could be as organized as some of the people in zvi's post, but no. I have it all in my head, and I don't stick to my plan once I start writing if it feels wrong.

I just started from the beginning and wrote in chronological order. The parts where I stuck close to the original fic were easiest to write, because I had the original text to compare with. Then I expanded a scenes which had only been alluded to and added scenes, and that was a bit slower to write, and also the point where I changed my mind from my original plan, because it wasn't quite cohesive enough.

I'm happy with what I wrote, but also glad we have a week to wait for the fics. I enjoy the anticipation, and I plan to look over my fic again with fresh eyes some time during the week, and fix any flaws which may have been overlooked.

And I can hardly wait to see what my remixer has come up with for my fic! I've looked at the collection site, and tried to guess which of my fics has been remixed based on the fandoms, ratings and pairings in the filter menu. I have to admit, I hope it is very different from what I wrote, that would be fun.

How did the writing go for you?
Do you dread the reveal, or look forward to it like a kid looks forward to her birthday?
