1. some girls (dance with women) (Izzie/Addison)
Addison is bent over an infant, who's about to have open heart surgery. She's bent over an infant, directing O'Malley on how to prep the baby before they cut into her chest and do incredibly delicate surgical work. The baby is asleep, thank god, but it's still the part of the job that's the most stressful, the part that requires the most concentration.
Which makes it so, so wrong that Addison isn't focusing all of her attention on the case.
Except that O'Malley's got it. He's good at it, even. And behind her, she can feel Izzie Stevens. Hovering.
Ever since coming back to work Stevens has been lurking in the background, watching but not-watching, learning and not-learning all at once. There's a limit to how much about being a doctor you can learn when you never come near the process, and Addison can't help but shake the thought that her job is to teach. And she's not teaching right now.
Stevens is doing the thing that Addison remembers from when she was an intern, the thing where you're looking at the doctors ahead of you but you're not thinking about the case at all, you're thinking of what specialty you'll go into or what surgery will get you in the record books or what bar you'll be going to later that night or what attending you'd most like to be-
Oh.
"Doctor Stevens," Addison says.
Izzie blinks rapidly, like she just noticed Addison's eyes on her for the first time. And when she does, her face blossoms into a smile. She doesn't even mind being sent out to deal with the parents. She's doing something.
Addison turns back to O'Malley, studies his hands, and murmurs "You're doing just fine". He nods, accepting the compliment, and doesn't seem to realize that she's speaking to herself as much as to him.
2. do you wanna dance? (Addison/Alex)
Addison has no idea why he did it. But when Alex Karev passed her in the parking lot this morning, he looked twice. And when she got upstairs, he handed her a coffee like it was just something they did.
Two milk, one sugar. Just how she likes it. Like he remembered, or something.
She's touched. Kind of. She's touched in a weird way, where she's not sure what she's supposed to be thinking, because it would almost make her think he was into her, if he wasn't Alex Karev.
"I thought you were in plastics," she says.
"I am," he tells her, in a voice that kind of proves her point. "You just looked like you needed a cup of coffee."
It's sweet. And touching. In a way that, even if he's not into her, she just might be considering being into him.
Definitely enough that she can tell him about her case today, without even making him ask.
3. time to dance (Addison/Mark)
The thing with Addison is, there's never enough of her. Six months of Addison in New York was enough to get him addicted. As it turns out, fucking Addison is kind of like a drug.
So he soaks up any Addison that he can get. Smirks at her in an elevator, leans over her to pick up a chart instead of walking around her to get it, basks in just being near her. The way you have to, with Addison Montgomery. The way you have to with anyone who's worth it.
So, half hour in the supply closet, where he fucked her so hard she had to bite his shoulder to keep from screaming? It's not nearly enough. But it's not a bad start either.
4. save the last dance (Izzie/Alex)
Okay, so Alex is scum. Scum with no bedside manner. Scum who slept with Olivia the Syph Nurse multiple times. Scum who she dated, like, more than once, so Izzie is totally over Alex Karev.
Except that she kind of knows what he's going through. There are days when Bailey's on the warpath, and all of the attendings want them to have the perfect attitude without giving them a chance to get anywhere near the surgeries, and the sheer volume of stupid errands to run are so overwhelming where you can barely eat, let alone suck up enough that somebody'll let him practice some real medicine. The only difference is, that makes Izzie cheerful. That makes Alex... this.
She's eating lunch when he comes by Really Old Guy's room, and seriously, he looks like hell. And she could say something, but she just realizes that this is one of those days for Alex. So... okay.
He sinks into the chair next to hers and looks like he's about to fall over, so she passes him her apple and gives him a look. "Is Alex okay?"
He smiles a kind of twisty smile. "Yeah," he says. "Alex is okay."
"Good," Izzie says, and she's surprised to realize she means it.
5. i don't feel like dancin' (Alex/Mark)
Mark is kissing Alex Karev right now. He's doing it, and he's not ashamed.
Addison has told him time after time about keeping it in his pants when he's in the hospital, but come on. It's Seattle Grace. If you're not banging an intern, they take away your license to practice.
And every hospital has procedures. In New York, you had to fill out the clipboards with blue ink. In Seattle, if you go into a stairwell, there better be something happening that can get written to Penthouse later.
So when the fight goes into the stairwell, Mark knows where it's going. He stares Alex dead in the eye, the way that people at Seattle Grace do.
And then they continue the way people at Seattle Grace do, staring each other down turning into hard, angry kisses, and Alex sliding his hand behind Mark's head and Mark's hands making their way up his shirt. And Alex's leg hooking over Mark's hip and Mark grinding against him.
When in Rome, you know? Or at least when in Seattle.
Because Mark is kissing Alex Karev. And Alex Karev is totally liking it,
6. i bet you look good on the dancefloor (Izzie/Mark)
If there's one thing plastics has taught Mark Sloan, it's that trying once is never the be-all and end-all of achievement. If you want something done right, sometimes you have to do it more than once.
Still, the third time Mark asks Izzie to bring him a cup of coffee is also the third time she refuses to take his money, and the third time she gives him directions to the coffee stand out front, and that means that maybe he needs to change his tactics a little.
So he pauses, and gives her a long look that he hopes looks a lot more respectful, and he smiles at her as he slips the bills back into his wallet, and he winks a little.
It works. He can tell.
"Doctor Stevens," he says, "you might remember I'm new here, and I'm a still little fuzzy with directions. Would you mind showing me where it is?"
He's surprised and not-surprised, all at once, when she says no, she will not. But that's okay. She wavered a little. He knows he's good.
The fourth time Mark asks Izzie to bring him a cup of coffee is the second time he asks her to take him to the coffee stand. And this time, she agrees.
7. dancing with myself (Mark/mirror)
The mirror is in love.
Oh, sure. It's inanimate. That's what everyone else seems to think.
But some people get how it feels. Some people even care.
Mark Sloan is one of those people.
Mark never forgets to look at it for a long time. Smiling. Approving. Knowing.
It's nice.
Mark could get any girl into bed with nothing more than a long look and a smile, and he's already been propositioned by half the nursing staff, but when he's at home, that's not what matters. It's just him and the mirror.
And the mirror likes it.
The shower starts, and the steam fills the room. The bathroom's getting all humid, and the mirror is getting a little fogged up. But can you blame it?
Mark is fucking hot. And he knows who his number one partner is.
