Title: Visitors From the Edge(The Edith Keeler Must Die Remix) Author: smittywingSummary: Bates thought he was going crazy when another Dr. McKay showed up with a hot redhead

All I have to say is Edith Keeler + Bates + McKay/Cadman = MADE OF WIN.
(also, you totally win for keeping this a secret from me. I am VERY impressed.)
I am all asquee right now. SERIOUSLY.
You wrote BATES! And he's all "I'm not going crazy! I did see these people."
And then he couldn't save them, and Rodney didn't save him! (and I didn't even think about that when I started the story - there are so many things Rodney could have done.) and just WOW.
I have SO MUCH LOVE RIGHT NOW.
Bates stared at McKay and Cadman, frozen at the end of the video. He cleared his throat and straightened, feeling the shift of his nearly-healed collarbone fracture.
*beams* I am SO glad you enjoyed it and actually, really really glad that you guessed it was me. :D Because it would have been TORTURE pretending to "go read your story" and then help you guess who it was. ;) I didn't think you'd get it from the TITLE but that makes it even BETTER!
I'm glad I got you - I could say, "Now what would she REALLY like to see?" and I already had that answer. ;) *hugs* Yay remix!
I'm so glad someone wrote a sympathetic Bates. I was never sold on the idea of Bates being evil and unreasonable. It's good to see him getting some respect.
raisintorte has had a deep and abiding love for Bates as long as I've known her and I was glad to finally have a story to write for him (and her! Even though it's really her story.) Thank you!
Oh this was SO GREAT! What an incredible story to weave out of the backstory of the other - wonderful touches, and great characterization, and I particularly loved that you rehabilitated Bates for me! :D Lovely fic ♥
Wow, thank you! Poor Bates was very nearly always right, but went about communicating that so very badly. (Well, for his audience - the other Marines on the expedition would likely see it his way right away.) There's a bit on the Siege commentary where we're told that Bates was taken back to Earth through the wormhole and didn't return to Atlantis...and then the speakers wonder if the commentary track is how the actor finds out he's out of a job and...that's about the due Bates got. So I was glad to give him a little extra here and there.
It wins for the sheer number of pop culture references (well-applied and relevant instead of just there), for making Bates a good guy, for Sheppard ragging on McKay (for everyone ragging on McKay), and for Cadman winning the argument.
*laugh* Thank you. All the Marines I have known have managed to simultaneously be dicks and also the best guys ever. Bates is just keeping up a proud tradition. ;)
And thank you for the help with the secret-keeping! The OMG email I got when she read the story was the best thing ever. :D
I really love Bates here! And I love that you've taken cues from his 'Letters from Pegasus' video message, which was absolutely my favorite bit of Bates on the show. Very very cool. :)
Aw, thank you! I loved that bit, about his little brother and the way he wanted his last message to be upbeat and positive, to keep his brother from thinking he was unhappy or scared when he died. That's a guy who knows how to be a role model.
