On some level, she still remembers everything that happened that night. The sounds of screaming and shouting, the crunch of bones breaking, the sharp coppery scent of blood. Most of all, she remembers the taillights of his car, as his big black car faded away into the night.
She stood at the window for what seemed like forever, waiting for him to come back. He had to come back. He always had before.
It seemed like it took forever, but he does come back. That’s his car, she’d know it anywhere. He’s changed, yes, but time would do that to a person.
This time, she won’t let him leave. This time, things are going to be better.
She took things into her own hands. A few herbs and Latin words, and he is hers forever.

It is so important that things are absolutely perfect before he wakes up. Everything has to be just right. She creates a world that he can’t resist. This world is hers to control, and it is going to be perfect. She won’t settle for less.
Their house is two stories, white washed with a picket fence. The street that they live on is similarly fashioned, with a couple of neighborhood dogs that never ever bite the milkman. They have all of the finest things in their home- from china to appliances, it’s showroom perfect, and it will always be clean.
It’s like a movie, only better, because this is hers. No, theirs.
She transforms herself to look more like his mother, with long blonde hair and curls. At night she wears a white nightgown, just like his mother used to wear.
He’ll never want to leave.

Why won’t he just be happy?
Everything that he used to complain about- that the house was too messy, that they didn’t have enough money or enough friends- has been fixed. He should be able to just let go and relax. Life is how he always wanted it, and now he’s fighting it? It doesn’t make sense.
She tries to make things better, adjusting things little by little.
Reading his mind, she transforms herself to have a smile and a laugh like a girl that weighs heavily on his mind, a girl named Jo. And she gets him a new toothbrush- one that plays a KISS tune while he brushes, which she can tell he wanted, but never would have bought for himself.
It should be his dream come true. But that still isn’t enough.
_____________
He spends most of his time in front of the TV. It’s a beautiful TV, flat screen and plasma, with all the accessories a guy could want- Satellite TV, DVD player, TIVO, an X-Box 360 and a Wii. The DVD library is extensive, with all the videos that she could think of, as well as a few he really seemed to like. He barely looks at the collection though- if he’s in front of the TV he’s watching a movie with his daughter.
He never picks a movie, but lets his daughter, Dinah, choose. So far they’ve watched the entire Disney Animated library, as well as the movies everyone seems to think are Disney but aren’t- Anastasia, The Swan Princess, and An American Tail.
He sings along when the animated characters chortle “There are no rats in America”. When the mice sing “Somewhere Out There”, Dinah snuggles close to him, and he doesn’t push her away.
It’s the only time that things seem right.
_______________
He isn’t the same man that left them so long ago. That fact becomes painfully clear when she reads his mind.
His name is Dean Winchester, and even with a mind full of issues and bent up hostility, he’s a better man then the one who peeled rubber backing out of the driveway years ago. Dean would never hurt them.
He tries a million different times, a million different ways to escape; but he never lays a hand on either of them.
As long as Dean is here, she doesn’t need him to come back.

Every day, she says “I love you” to Dean.
He’s yet to say it back.
He might though, one day. That’s what she hopes.

Dean’s stupid brother won’t give up. Back there, in that world, he’s bent over Dean’s comatose body, a surrounded by a stack of papers and books, frantically studying.
It’s not fair. Sam has a whole world of people to interact with. A whole world of people to love. But Dean isher world.
Dean misses Sam, too. She thinks about altering the spell, about dragging Sam into this world. But Dean loves Sam; and if Sam was around, Dean would want to be with Sam more than her. That just won’t do.
Instead, she creates her own Sam. Gives him a gun, and this Sam blows Dean full of lead. Sam smiles as Dean’s blood coats the floor.
In the morning, Dean still misses his brother.

Dean bakes a cake for Dinah’s birthday. He covers it in pink icing and uses candy letters from the bakery aisle at the grocery store to decorate it. He hasn’t made a cake since Sammy was little.
In this moment, she feels like everything is perfect.
Dean sets the cake down on the table in front of his daughter, and she giggles in delight.
“Make a wish!” She says, looking up at him, giving his cheek a sloppy kiss.
He nods, shuts his eyes, and helps her blow out the candles.
She wishes this would last forever.

She never liked Sam.
Sam ruined everything.
Sam, with all his books and papers, found a way to break her spell. He took Dean away, took away the wonderland she’d created for herself.
The house is empty now, dark and smelly. Several Windowpanes are broken, and there’s a nest of raccoons over in the corner. There are no neighbors, no friends, no fancy car, nothing at all.
Once, Dean had let her watch ”The Sixth Sense”. It was supposed to be a scary movie, and so she snuggled up close to Dean. Nothing could go wrong when he was here to protect her.
Even so, she had a nightmare that night, and Dean had whispered her name softly, rubbing her head gently until she went to sleep.
She pretends that she can her Dean now, saying her name softly. “Dinah. Dinah.”.
She’s all alone.
Bruce Willis hadn’t realized that he was already dead throughout the entire movie, up until the end.
Dinah had known that it hurt very, very much that night when her first Daddy had slammed her up against the stairs. She remembered things going blurry; remembers seeing her mother’s crumpled body beside her, briefly lit up by the light of her first Daddy’s car’s taillights. But she hadn’t realized that she was dead.
Dinah sat down by the mirror in the living room, an ornate golden framed mirror that had once been her mother’s showpiece, and antique passed down from generation to generation. It is now covered in cobwebs, the glass itself splintered into tiny fragments.
She so wanted Dean to stay and be her Daddy. That would have been perfect.
Dinah gazes into the mirror, and sees nothing but her own reflection.
Dean told excellent bedtime stories; he read every book on her bookshelf to her, even the chapter books. They’d been reading Alice and Wonderland before stupid Sam had broken the spell and ruined everything.
“It seems such a shame” she said softly, as she placed a hand on the splintered mirror “To play them suck a trick…but the butter’s spread too thick.” The Walrus and the Carpenter was her favorite part of the book.
The mirror shimmers, and for a second, she can hear and see Dean again.
“Dinah.” He calls softly.
His reflection is gone all too soon; leaving nothing but a shattered image of her own face.
