I've come across another "designer dog" (read as: an on-purpose mutt) on Friday. I swear, my forehead is going to hold a permanent bruise from hitting my head on my desk out of frustration by all these people trying to pass off their mutts as some kind of new purebred dog. But, I suppose if I paid $800 for an unpapered puppy, I might be in denial

My dog has received a lot of compliments from people wanting to know what breed she was. Funny when I reply she's a border collie/german shepherd/black lab mix. ;) And she only cost me $15 at a yard sale!

Do you have pictures of her? :)

Which is also why my parents picked up another mutt a few weeks ago. ;) I think I've officially turned them off buying expensive purebreds (our last two dogs were purebred English Springer Spaniels.)

Puppy was a german shepard/coyote mix - one of the best dogs ever.
Max was a lab mixed with something small. I think it might have been something weird like a beagle.
and Polly was a Springer/Pit mix, and one of the best dogs!
Mutts are the best! I've been looking into standard poodles and dachshunds lately, but even then, I'm still looking into rescues and not breeders.

However, it probably should be mentioned that buying a dog at a yard sale encourages backyard breeding, which is where most shelter dogs come from in the first place.
If you are looking for a dog (be it a purebred or a mutt) it's a great idea to look in the rescues first.

The yardsale was a neighbor of mine's that recieved a dog not knowing she was pregnant. The female was spayed once the puppies were gone. No encouragement for something that was an accident!
All other dogs we've had have either come from breeders (registered purebreds) or shelters.
