Maxis_Taste Dare 24

Hey guys! This is my entry for maxis_taste Dare 24. Now I did go a little bit overboard with it, so I hope it still counts.

Warning: Language, horror, bad 'ghost' stories, violence, death (or so to speak..)

"I can't believe you talked me into this. Why do we have to spend Halloween in a creepy old house?"

The four of them sat in a little room upstairs in the House of Fallen trees. Dustin had brought them there for their Halloween hangout, after finding out that it had been abandoned for almost half a century. That, and the stories attached to it were conducive to a 'nice' Halloween atmosphere. They were spending the night there too, apparently, and Angela wasn't warming up to the plan.

"Dustin, it's cold and dark, and smells like something died in the wall cavity. Do we have to stay here?"

"What, would you rather go trick or treating with your parents? Come on! It's not so bad. I'd light a fire, babe, but there's a dead possum up there."

"That's probably what's causing the smell." Dirk mumbled.

"I guess it's not so bad." Angela mused, "I mean, I'd rather be here that with mom, dad and Delilah. Everything's major awkes now."

Lilith was eying off the rest of the Chinese food. "Is anyone else still hungry? I might finish all that fried rice off."

They had raided the kitchen as soon as they got there, and had found some old glassware. Good thing too, because that meant Dustin had to share his booze. Cheap wine went surprisingly well with cheap Chinese food.

"Hell, I'd rather be here." Said Dirk. "When I left, dad was in one of his moods. He's so hot on that Goth lady, it's not even funny. She's friend zoned him. Now, I find that funny as all hell."

"Ha! Yeah. My mom went to bingo totally pissed. Took Beau with her too. Man, that kid's gonna be so messed up when he's older. Kinda sad, really."

"Nah, he should be alright. At least your mom's a nice drunk."

Lilith hummed to herself, "I really can't be arsed to reach all the way over there.. But I'm hungry."

"OH!" The sudden noise made the rest of them jump, which made Dustin laugh. "Guys, we should so tell ghost stories. C'mon! It's Halloween in a big scary house. Perfect atmos, don'cha reckon?"

Angela looked to the big glass door, "I don't know, Dustin. I wanna get a bit of sleep later.."

Lilith on the other hand, was welcome to this idea.

"Sh'yeah! Totally! Anyone got anything good? I know a couple of real pants-shitters."

"That's lovely, Lilith. Do tell!" Angela scoffed.

"Hmmm.." She had to think of a good one. "Have any of you heard the one about the woman on the subway?"

"Is it going to result in me getting no sleep tonight?" Angela yawned, and Lilith chuckled darkly.

"There was a young man in New York. He had finished work late, say about 9 at night, and he had to take the subway home. So, anyway, he got on the train and it was empty-"

Angela gasped dramatically, and her sister cast her a bemused look.

"As I was saying.. The carriage was empty, bar these two guys and a woman sitting between them. Thinking that he'd be safer sitting with them, he walked over an sat across from them. When he looked up, he noticed that the woman was staring at him. He tried to smile, but she just. Kept. Staring."

Lilith paused for dramatic effect, "He had a newspaper with him, so to try to distract himself, he read it. Every time he looked up, she was staring hard at him. Of course, it freaked him out. After a few stops, another man got on, and came and sat down next to him. As the train started to move again, he lent over and whispered in his ear, "If you know what's good for you, you'll get off at the next station with me.". He turned to look at him, and his face was pale with fear. He thought for a moment, and looked back to the woman, who was still staring so intently at him."

"Is he going to be eaten by something?" Dirk drawled, but Lilith ignored him.

"He thought that the scared man next to him was probably a safer bet, and so he got off at the next station with him. As soon as they got onto the platform he pulled him away behind a wall. They heard the train take off and the young man was about ready to hit him and run. To his surprise, the other man grabbed his phone and dialed 911. As he put the phone to his ear, he said to him, "Thank god you listened to me. I'm a doctor, and that woman sitting across from us was dead. Those two men were propping her up."

"That's creepy!" Angela winced. "Now I'm gonna be scared of going on trains at night. Thanks Lilith.."

"Anytime!" She replied jovially.

"Dustin, what was that story you started telling me the other day. I know I'm asking for it, but maybe you can out-do her."

He shifted slightly. "You sure you want me to tell that one? It's a real story though."

"Now I'm intrigued." Dirk mumbled, but Lilith just shrugged.

"Pff, okay. Go ahead."

Dustin cleared his throat. "You know how sometimes people do staged hangings for Halloween shows? Like, they'll have gallows and they act like they're being hung? This one guy, he was supposed to jump with a noose that don't tighten, but sommat went wrong."

"He hung himself? In front of people?" Angela gasped, "That's horrible!"

"Yeah," He continued. "No one noticed anything was up. They thought it was all part of the act. He was the same age as we are, guys."

"That's screwed up, I'll tell you what.. Man, That's sad and scary at the same time." Dirk shuddered.

"Of all the ways to accidentally top yourself, that's a doozy." Lilith chuckled. "Imagine your demise being witnessed by so many and poked fun of. That's really sucky, but still makes you think, aye!"

"Goes to show, you never know when. Now, enough of all this depressing shit." Dustin smirked, "Pass me that bottle will you babe?"

They all sat and drank, chatting away the time. Lilith couldn't get his story out of her head.

"Never know when. Heh.."

"You're still on about that?" Angela scoffed, rolling her eyes, but Lilith's mumblings had cast a renewed gloom over them all..

They sat in silence, until Dustin blurted, "I have to pee. Really bad."

He stood up as they laughed. "I'll be back in a few, gonna go find a bathroom.

"There's one right there." Lilith said, pointing to the other door.

"Yeah, but there's no toilet in there no more."

He walked out, "If I'm not back in an hour, send a search party."

"It's okay, we'll just send Dirk." Lilith laughed.

"Hey!"

"God, this place is so depressing."

He had searched the whole house for a bathroom, but they were all empty. He had one last place to look. The bedroom he had just entered was dark, dank, and made him feel miserable. More-so than the rest of the house. There was something about this room that made him feel weird.

"This place gives me the creeps.. Euuggghhhh.."

Thankfully, it was the only room with a bathroom that hadn't been cleaned out.

He walked back into the room, and the feeling returned. The smell was enough to put anyone off. It was a strange mix of mold and earth.

He was about to open the door and run back up to his friends, when he noticed it was brighter than before.

"What the.."

The candle wasn't lit before. He walked closer. There was no smell of matches, and none of them had a lighter with them. Maybe they lit it with the candle they already had, but Angela was terrible with pranks. You could always hear her laughing. There was nothing that told him they had been in the room. No footsteps. He had been in there less than a minute. Did that give them enough time?

"Probably just the guys screwing with me. Heh, mission 'scare the crap out of Dustin' complete.."

Grrooowwwlll

He jumped a good foot in the air. "GAH! What the hell!? Shit, you scared the hell outta me.. Heh, uh, nice costumes. Who are yo-"

"Who are YOU!?" her voice was raspy, and strangely resounding in the little room. "What are you doing in OUR house?"

"I'm sorry!" He choked. The smell of rotting earth was too strong for him. "I was told this place was abandoned. I'll go get my friends and we'll leave."

"You think we're going to let you get away so easy? I don't think so.."

She reached out and pushed him back with a single finger, but It felt like someone had just shoulder barged him in the chest. He stumbled backwards, winded.

He stood up tall, although it hurt to do so. "What the fuck was that? How did you-"

"SHUT UP!" She screeched, and his blood ran cold. The other boy moved closer, and he realised he was cornered.

"What the fuck, man? This shit isn't funny, now let me go!" Dustin ordered, the fear in his voice obvious.

Without warning the blonde boy jumped at him. Dustin was no match against him, the physical strength the other boy possessed was inhuman.

As he tried to break free of his grasp, all he could hear was the girl's maniacal laughter. Surely his friends would hear all this happening and come help him. They had to. He hoped to the creator they would.

The blonde boy managed to finally push him down, and Dustin's head connected with the edge of the mantle piece. He was out cold in an instant.

That was probably the best thing..

"But Dirk, I heard something downstairs, we have to go see if he's okay!" Angela was beyond worried, wringing her hands as Dirk sighed.

"Ange, he's playing around with us. It's Halloween, he's probably been planning something all along and you wanna run straight into it?"

"Dirk's right," Lilith snorted, "He does stuff like this all the time and you still haven't learned?"

"But it's been a half hour. What if something really happened to him?"

"Oh, give it up, Angela. You're starting to act like a bloody mother to him. I think we should just-" Lilith stopped as she saw Dirk's expression.

"Dirk? You okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Angela froze. "Liiiiliiiith?"

"Heeey, did you guys miss me?"
