faery strikes again!

earlier today the doorbell rang. it happened at right around mailtime which is always exciting 'cause sometimes it means a package. and indeed. it meant a package. a nice, slim, square box from amazon.com. addressed to me (me!) and i wasted no time in tearing it open which revealed The Three Questions, a beautifully written and illustrated retelling of an even more beautiful story by Tolstoy.

faery! thank you. thank you! i just read the story (i had to run off to work earlier, so didn't have a chance to read it) and i am, quite frankly, entirely verklempt. it's the perfect tale for me right at the moment. and has all sorts of resonances. the author, Jon Muth, mentions that he initially came across a reference to Tolstoy's story in a book by the Vietnamese Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh, whose meditation center, Plum Village, is less than 100 kilometres from bordeaux. i keep meaning to get over there and visit, see what it's like. for as long as i can remember, my father has practiced zen meditation, finding ways to incorporate the ideas and the teachings of zen into his everyday life, so of course I'm familiar with Thich Nhat Hanh from talking to and listening to my father. the story you sent me has all sorts of lovely and approachable zen qualities. ones which i would do well to take deeply to heart.

truly, i just can't say enough how much i love your gift, for itself because it is beautiful, but also because of your thoughtfulness and sensitivity.

thank you.
