Holly, you wrote #5 much better than I ever could have done. May I use that portion of your post as an example of why I don't like it? I would leave your name off if you'd like.

I feel the same way when people say, "that's gay." It's irritating to put it very, very mildly.

Sure Becky! I'm thinking of posting it on facebook but I have a lot of black friends and even though I think they would know what I meant by it, I don't want to offend them either. Definitely leave off my name until I decide what I'm going to do about it.

I worry about losing the punch because it really seems like people just don't get it. So many people have tried to explain it in so many ways but I still hear people saying that "it isn't what they meant" or that the word doesn't describe Trent so it is okay to use the word. They don't get that the word describes Trent via his diagnosis but also by the way the world had turned that word into a hurtful name. Just as the word nigger has because a word synomous with hate a million times more than it was when it first being used. I know you and so many others get it. I just don't know how to make others get it. I'm gonna try though.

Ditto on "that's gay". It implies that gay means screwed up.

Exactly! And my SIL uses it that way... in front of her gay uncle!
