Fun Fun Movie Time: Movie number one was Irreversible. I read about this movie a while ago, and almost bought it back in Ottawa. I was quite surprised when I found it on DVD at First Run. Now this is one hell of an upsetting movie. It's told backwards, so you see the consequences of actions before you actually see the actions. And it's from France, so there's subtitles.
There's a beating with a fire extinguisher in a gay sex club and an extremely brutal rape. The camera didn't pan away from either scene. You see every strike with the fire extinguisher, every fucking impact. It's insane. For the rape scene, the girl and the rapist are in the middle of the shot. You see the whole damn thing. And then the beating that commences afterwards.
The end of the movie is the happiness that goes before the horrible acts, and it's rather upsetting and disturbing. You see these people, happy, joking around, in love, and they have no idea what awaits them. It's sad. Time destroys all things. And we can't see it coming.
