“This reminds me of a song.” Goren said as he looked at a picture of the victim he’d found in her wallet.
“What?”
The odd pair of detectives had found themselves in a makeshift operation room, where a woman lay dead on the table; an illegal, botched cosmetic surgery. Now as Eames stood next to him, she stared strangely up at him waiting for him to continue.
“Small town girl, runs away to New York, does everything to make herself beautiful and fit in; only to be taken from the world.”
“It’s too common a story isn’t it?”
“Why though? She was already a beautiful…Someone should have told her that.”
Both detectives were staring at the body pensively now.
“…all born pretty in New York City tonight…” Eames tore her eyes from the girl and turned to look up at her partner as his words broke her thoughts while his own eyes still stayed on the body. “…someone’s little girl was taken from the world tonight…”
Goren moved his saddened eyes to meet the gaze of his partner.
“She just needed someone to tell her that she was already beautiful.”
The tall detective walked out of the apartment without a glance back at Eames or the victim. There was just something too heartbreaking about the scene, it just felt like too much for him; maybe it was the song, those lines that were repeating over and over in his head; melancholy and haunting.
When he reached the SUV, Eames hadn’t been far behind and they both got in silently. It wasn’t until they were almost back to 1PP that she broke the silence.
“What was the song?”
Goren turned with a sad smile on his lips.
“Carry You Home...Blunt”
Taking a quick glance at him, surprised that he even knew who that was, Eames saw the smile
“What is it?”
“I finally remember the last few lines, ‘but when it is quiet I know what it means and I’ll carry you home.’ Her parents are coming to the city for her, she’ll get home. It is a comfort, considering how she died.”
Eames shared the sentiment, and with a nod, turned her eyes to the road letting silence fall over them, both comforted with a sudden light hearted mood.
She’d hear them now when they told her as they lay her to rest. She’d always be her parent’s beautiful girl.
