There was just something about New York at night.

Sometimes he was sure that it was the perfect mirror of his personality; vigilant and unsleeping, dark and unmoving. Of course, there were also the adjectives he’d rather not think of too, like crazy dangerous and unpredictable, but as Robert Goren walked the darkened streets of Manhattan deep in thought he knew that they all may be true to him as well; the NYPD was sure of it anyways.

There wasn’t much he could really do about it now.

If he had to do it all over again though, he would still have gone to Tate’s; it was just something that he was sure he needed to do. He wouldn’t have involved Eames though; she has already lost so much for being associated with him, and now this just puts one more strike into her jacket as well.

Maybe it would have been better if he had just died there.

The city wouldn’t be so similar then. That is just one more thing he loved about New York, and about him self. Maybe the only thing he liked about himself; he never gave up. Sure he’d been beaten-by Nicole, by circumstance, even by himself-but he always got back up, always held his principles strong, much like the city had after 9/11.

Goren grimaced at himself for that comparison; it was one thing to compare yourself to a city, and something completely different to compare yourself with the aftermath of a tragedy and the mentality of a population.

He really could make himself sick sometimes.

He took out a cigarette now, lighting it in cupped hands, admiring the fire for a second before killing it and taking a deep drag. He’d smell like smoke after this but he didn’t care; at least he didn’t smell like the city.

That last thought made him laugh out loud to himself, scaring some stray cat that had been hiding as he passed; it ran from him with a hiss. Smart cat. Everyone would be smart to run away, but none of them were. Eames had called everyday since his suspension, and would come over every few days with take out and a movie. Ross called once, and had managed to cajole him out for a drink. Deakins and Logan were the biggest surprise; somehow they now had a standing poker game every Sunday night.

Yes, just like the city, no matter how crazed or dangerous it got people just didn’t want to leave it; they loved it. And somehow, these people refuse to desert him, somehow these people loved him, and somehow, he loved them all too.

Maybe it was better that he didn’t die at Tate’s.

Goren was back at his apartment now, and there was Eames waiting outside with a smile and food. Flinging the butt of his cigarette out onto the street, he returned the smile with a small one of his own, and followed her through the doors but not without a final look out into the darkened city.

Yes, there really was something about New York City at night.
