Small Worlds

“You shouldn’t be here”

“Neither should you.” Ianto had replied curtly and stalked toward his computer and sat down while Jack followed. Then the man had touched him, a light hand on his shoulder, and it made him sit up a little higher.

There was just something in Jack’s touch. Ever since Lisa, Ianto felt like he now owed something to the Captain and the little touch felt like the reminder; he owed Jack his life. Ianto had only been with Torchwood Three, with Jack, for a year now but had seen Jack kill without discretion or hesitation when it was needed. So, when faced with not only Ianto, who’d for all purposes put everyone in Cardiff in danger while betraying the team he, most terribly, brought something deadly into Jack’s home. Yet, while it could easily, and should have translated into a traitor’s death for him, Jack chose instead to remove the threat, kill Lisa, and then even more surprising he kissed Ianto back into consciousness.

Yes, Ianto decided, he did owe the man and it gave him a purpose; something he’d been missing. So he sat up taller and pushed into the hand, said nothing about it, and dove into the strange weather patterns he’d found.

When the team came back after saving the world at the cost of a child, they were all mad, or maybe afraid of Jack. If a child could be sacrificed, it left them all a little unease to know that they would be just as easily fed to monsters. As they relayed what happened, Ianto watched as they all stayed silent and distant toward the leader and he gained just a little more insight into the man they all followed rather blindly. Ianto realized that they weren’t at all that different, Jack and him. Jack did things, no matter how hard out of love for the Earth and humanity, while he had done what he did for the love of a woman and in the end neither would be able to reciprocate.
