We have entered an era in videogames that is becoming harder and harder for me to follow. Everything we have discussed since the crash of videogames in 1983-4 is very unfamiliar with me. Going into EPYX and Lucasfilms and such, just means nothing to me. I am not saying this just to fill up space. I think that this represents a genre of videogames, instead, that has a “blitzkrieg” effect on the industry, in that it comes along and makes a big bang, and then just fades out quickly. This has to be the case because I was never brought up around these things and I don’t know anyone of my friends that were playing these games. To play devil’s advocate, however, it would seem as if this is a false pretense because of the massive amounts of money these games generated. I can see how these games would have been so huge. To compare systems like Atari and Colecovision, and then to go to a game that is somewhat interactive. And a game like Maniac Mansion, where the game adds commentary, how incredible in 1987! I would have been psyched for something like that too. But once again, something must have been wrong with these platforms because they do not ring any sort of bell in my head. I actually looked up some of these games online and read about them outside of lecture. It would have been interesting to have been born 5 years earlier, then maybe I would have been able to experience some of these games.
