Pacific Rim

I went to see Pacific Rim over the weekend and was surprised at how much I liked it. My movie buddy and I try to see at least one really bad movie a year and, although we'd already seen Oblivion, decided to go anyway. This is not a movie that aspires to great intellectual heights - there are plot holes you could drive a semi through and holes in the laws of physics you could steer a container ship through. However, the movie seems aware of this and pretty much tells you to just enjoy it for what it is: giant robots v. giant monsters. At that level, it's quite cool.

I do applaud the one significant female character not being there primarily as a sex object, although the film fails the Bechdel Test because she's the only significant female character. Given the quite machismo subject matter, I was more surprised there were female robot pilots at all. Overall, I think it's worth seeing on the big screen if you get a chance and want something that rewards not thinking too much. Which is what Summer used to be for, innit?
