Gandalf Wannabe

When I first started playing Lord of the Rings Online, I had just quit World of Warcraft and had pretty much sworn off massively-multiplayer games. But I kpet looking at the LotRO site and it seemed you could almost play Gandalf. I didn't want to actually play Gandalf, that'd be too obvious, and the game doesn't have actual wizards in it as playable characters. Tolkien was quite clear that Gandalf was, basically, a demigod, and you couldn't actually be a wizard in LotRO without breaking what a lot of people came to LotRO for.

However, one of the character classes in the game is the Lore Master, which seems to be the class aimed at being most like Gandalf. Lore Masters were the only character to wield a staff, and at higher levels, a sword as well. They have things like Blinding Flash and Eagle-Friend that seem to draw from Gandalf as their inspiration. And Turbine, LotRO's developer knows quite well that there are plenty of geeks like me that wanted to be Gandalf when they were younger.

So I yielded to temptation and created a Lore Master, of the Race of Man, which is what Gandalf rather looks like - although he is neither man nor elf. However, to avoid aping Gandalf completely, I made the character female. Now that she's getting through the middle of the game, it's possible for her to wield both a staff and sword, like a certain wizard, and I thought it's be fun to try and see how close to looking like the old wizard I could get with her. Overall, I'm fairly pleased with the results.

lotro, sharing
