Chapter One

When I was younger my Umma told me the story about the Angels. Angels are the carriers and protectors of souls. They lead the souls of those who have passed into the after life and protect those that remain on earth.
Umma told me of the Dark Angels, the White Angels and the Guardian Angels.
She told me of the White Angels, who carried the souls of the good to Heaven, making sure none got lost along the way, while the Dark Angels carried the souls of the wicked to their rightful place in the after life. Hell was where the souls of the cruel and greedy were taken. The Guardian Angels were the ones that protected the souls of those still alive. Out of the three Angels, it was the Dark Angel that the people feared.
I remember hearing the elders talking about the Dark Angel’s at the Spring Fair each year. I grew to fear them as the elders spoke of wicked creatures with huge black wings that came in the night and stole the souls of innocent people, dragging them down to Hell.
Umma however, was different. She didn’t fear the creatures like everyone else. Appa told me that this was because Umma had no reason to fear them. She was the kindest person he had ever met and when she passed, God would send his greatest Angels to protect her soul on its journey to Heaven.
My Umma was well liked in the town as she was a friend to everyone who needed her. Every day while Appa was at work and my brother and I had gone to school, Umma would head into town with bags of food that she would take to each home. She made clothing for the families who couldn’t afford to clothe their many children and she’d clean the houses of the elderly who could no longer do it themselves. What made the people love her so much was the fact that she never asked for anything in return. If anyone ever insisted on paying her back, whether it was a gift or money, Umma would kindly accept the gift and take it onto the next family, saying they had more need for it than us.
I accepted Appa’s explanation without a second thought. God would never let anything happen to my Umma; she was in her own way an Angel.

---------

It wasn’t until after my ninth birthday that the issue of the Dark Angels was brought up again.
It had been late afternoon when a woman had shown up at our door, begging for my Umma and Appa to join the search to find her young daughter, who had been missing since early morning. The whole town was out looking for the girl as many feared that she had befallen the same fate as many other children in the countryside that year. Over a dozen children had gone missing in the past months. Though no one had discovered where the children had disappeared to, many feared it was the slave traders, as it has been many times in the past.
Appa left my brother; Changmin and I at the house while he and Umma went out to help the search.
It wasn’t until early morning that Appa returned, exhausted and saddened. They had found the girl. He told us that the young girl had drowned, while swimming alone down at the river at the edge of town, she had hit her head and there had been no one to pull her from the water. He sighed deeply before pulling me and my brother into a tight hug while warning us to never swim alone, no matter how shallow the water or hot the day.
When I questioned where Umma was, a sad smile crossed his face as he told me she was staying in town to help the poor family of the girl. She would be back later tonight.
I had gone to bed that night, thinking of the young girl who had been barely a year younger than me. I’d never thought about death before. Not as I did that night at least. I had always thought it was only the elderly that died. Many in the town had passed away since I was born and though it was always sad, I remember how Appa told me, we all have to pass on eventually and all we could do was live our lives as best as we could before that happened. I had asked why it was always the old people who died and he told me it was because they had lived their life. It was their time. I had grown use to the idea as years went on but what bugged me now was that it hadn’t been that girl’s time. She was younger than me and had not yet begun to live her life, it had been stolen from her. This got me thinking about the Dark Angels and the tales I had heard in town. I remember lying in bed terrified that the Angels would take me next, until the early hours of the morning when I heard my Umma arrive home.
Climbing out of bed I met her at the front door. Upon seeing me, Umma pulled me into a tight hug, just as Appa had done some hours before. When she pulled away I saw her quickly wipe her eyes before looking at me with a small smile.
“Jaejoong, what are you still doing up?” she whispered to me, taking my hand and leading me back into my room.
“I’m scared Umma” I whispered back as she tucked me into bed. I was embarrassed that I was scared but I felt comfortable in telling Umma. She would help me.
“Why would you ever be scared? No one can hurt you here.” She gently stroked my hair from my face as she sat on the bed beside me.
“I know Umma, but I’m still scared. What happens if the Dark Angels come to take me just like they took that other girl?” Umma frowned at me.
“Who told you she was taken by Dark Angels? She wasn’t wicked or mean. She was just a little girl”
“I heard the elders say that Dark Angels steal good people’s soul and force them into Hell. I don’t want to go to Hell!” At this Umma lent down and placed a kiss on my forehead.
“Don’t you listen to those silly elders.” She whispered and I stared at her. Umma and Appa had always told me to listen to the Elders and what they say because they had been around for a lot longer than me and knew a lot more than I did. Now she was telling me not to listen to them.
“The Elders may be old and wise Jaejoong, but that does not mean they are always right. Dark Angels are nothing to fear. They deserve your thanks and gratitude not your hate and fear.”
“But…. They!”
“Jaejoong, do you want me to tell you why you shouldn’t fear the Dark Angels”
I nod my head furiously and she chuckles and she lies down next to me, hugging me to her closely.
When I look back now I believe that maybe she needed this closeness a lot more than I did at the time.
“When I was your age my Umma told me all about the Dark Angels. She told me they are God’s helpers. They protect us in the only way they can.”
“How?”
“They keep our world safe for us. My Umma said to me,” umma put on a bossy old voice imitating her beloved Umma. I giggled as she spoke, “she said ‘You listen here. Of all the Angels, Dark Angels are the most precious of all.’ I asked her why and she told me ‘it is because they die to save us.’ I was confused with what my Umma had told me and I asked her how Angels could die. Do you know what she told me, Jaejoong?”
“No, what?” I was listening as carefully as I could, not wanting to miss a word of what Umma was telling me.
“She told me that by taking bad souls into hell, they too died. Jaejoong, you know that it was God who created the White Angels right?”
“Yes.”
“Well, when the world was still new and God created the White Angels, the White Angels were in charge of the souls of the good…..”
“I know this already Umma. The White Angels where in charge of the Good and the Dark Angels were in charge of the bad.”
“But back then there were no Dark Angels!”
“What!”
“Do you know how the Dark Angels were created?”
I though for a second, remembering how the elders had said that the Dark Angels was the Devil’s creation. “The Devil made them?”
“No, Jae! Dark Angels were once White Angels too.”
“Then how’d they turn bad Umma?”
“They never did. They are as good now as they were then. When there were no Dark Angels, the souls of the evil were left to wonder the world. It was their punishment. They could never go to Heaven so they were trapped in between worlds. Not alive nor dead, they were nothing.
But after awhile the evil souls grew angry, they hated the living for being alive when they could not. Their anger made them stronger. They did terrible things. Many people died, as plagues, diseases and disasters struck the world. Some of the White Angels came together and decided they must help our world before it was destroyed. They decided they would capture the souls of the evil and take them to a place no one could escape from. They would take the souls to Hell.
When God heard of their plan, he warned them. To travel to Hell for an Angel would be fatal. They would slowly begin to burn and fade. The Angels were afraid but they believed they had to help us. So they began to gather up the evil souls and carry them to Hell. As they did, their white wings turned black and their eyes darkened. They were in great pain, but they traveled back and forwards between our world and Hell for almost 50 years, ridding our world of the evil souls. They saved our world but at a terrible cost. Slowly they began to die. The many trips back and forwards to Hell had destroyed them. They were reduced to ashes.” I saw a small tear slip from Umma’s eye as she finished her story
“But Umma, if they died, how come there are still Dark Angels?”
“Because, God saw what they had done for the world he created and he loved his Angels so much, he could not let them go forever. So from the ashes of each Angel he recreated each Angel. But when he raised them he saw wings were still Black and their eyes were dead.”
“Were they ugly Umma” I asked and Umma shook her head.
“Far from it Jaejoong, you know that Angels are the most beautiful of creatures, well Dark Angels are no different. If anything they are more beautiful than even our Guardian Angels.”
“Wow!” Jaejoong muttered his eyes wide.
“There was also another side effect of the Angels time in Hell.”
“What was it Umma?”
“The Angels could no longer enter Heaven. They had been to hell and were now stuck within our world and the underworld. So the Angels decided they would become the guardians of the souls that could not enter Heaven. They would remain in our world, collecting the souls of the wicked and carrying them through to Hell. For their sacrifice God promised that he would not raise them again but instead for every Dark Angel that died another would take its place. Continuing on their work and protecting our world. Dark Angels are precious Jaejoong because they do not have much time, they live shorter lives than even us and their existence is full of pain. But they do it for us and they do it proudly, for us.”
Umma placed a kiss on my cheek before she stood and walked to the door.
“You need to sleep now. You may sleep late tomorrow I will ask Changmin to take care of your chores.” She smiled at me as she closed the door. After that I slept easily though my dreams were filled with dark eyes and black wings.
