Definitely not true if you have a decent music player (like Amarok). All I did was make an account and start listening to music. After I'd listened to a few songs a new section appeared on my sidebar menu teling me about other similar artists. If I clicked on such an artist it would take me to an information page about them with other similar artists, why they think I'll like that artist and a link to start listening to them. It was all very simple. Try it.
