Idiocracy

Truth hurts. It's true. It does. Mostly the person who tells it.

People are interesting creatures. I love to observe their reactions to certain statements.

Denial - The most obvious choice. It's almost hilarious how people can ignore the most crucial piece of information. Fact, emotion, thought. How can you confuse those three on a constant basis?!

Thoughts create emotions. Those two we have control over. If you manage to control your thoughts, you will never feel bad again.
Facts exist outside of our heads. You don't have any influence on those. It is that simple to remember.

And yet, we oftentimes take our conclusions for facts and facts for an emotional state. The most important information will be denied if it doesn't match with what you feel is right.

Go on and live in your bubble. I'll hand you the needle as soon as you're ready.

Studying law I was confronted with mostly one reaction: "LAW???? Now that's a really dry topic, isn't it?"

It's really funny, because we all live on rules. We all pay bills and make agreements and participate in traffic. We have morals (theoretically). We buy food. We marry. Is that really such a dry thing to think about?

A social science student asked me the most hilarious thing ever: "Do you even have theories in law?" I stood there with my mouth open and didn't know what to answer him. Obviously he thought I was just learning a wicked amount of numbers by heart.

Here's what I should have answered: "Have you never read any book in your whole life?" Ethics, law, government, society and how they interact have been issues to think about since Aristotle. Of course a social scientist wouldn't know.

The reactions to my coming out a couple of years ago were even more hysterical... and sad.

Some people immediately think that now they have something to hold against you. You are a second class citizen. You are worth shit. You are nothing. They will make you feel less and less until you realize it and walk away. There's nothing else you can do. Just turn your back with what's left of your dignity.

Others suddenly become extremely interested in your sex life. Hello, boundaries? I'm also gay when I wash my clothes, you know.

There are people who distance themselves from you, but they really just need time to adjust. They need to get their head around the differences between you and them. Once they've done that, they become the best friends one can wish for.

The worst enemies, though, are people who think they are fine with you being gay, when they're really not. Ignorance and lack of self-concept are their weapons and they will be used by them to crash you entirely.
They befriend you and make nice. And then when your guards are down and you feel safe, that is when they strike:

You are invited to a party full of strangers and after a while you realize everyone you've never spoken to knows you are gay.

It is brought to your attention that they also had "that phase". Therefore you having "that phase" is absolutely ok.

If anything goes wrong in the friendship, it is because you have a crush on them. It doesn't matter that they are not your type and you have a girlfriend. Everything you do is gay. Everything you do is perverse.

Just know that you can't fix anything. Thoughts create emotions. And for many people emotions equal facts. You don't have any influence on other people's thoughts. You can never convince anyone of anything. You can only state facts and hope they convince themselves.
