and then some days are awesome

first things first:

1. I have accepted a staff position the Danville Register & Bee, the community newspaper for Danville, VA and Pittsylvania county.

2. I am the only staff photographer and multimedia creator on the staff of eight reporters. Some of them can take photos too, but they're not photographers. They love me for saving them from doing both, although I will very realistically have to do both eventually.

3. Since I started on Tuesday, I have covered two events featuring notable political figures: a rally on behalf of Barack Obama by a former governor of Mississippi, Ray Mabus, and the dedication of the Martin Luther King bridge by the Reverend Jesse Jackson. For Jackson, I sat in on an editorial board meeting (a Q&A with the writers and Jackson) and video taped it as well as photographed it, and I shot video and stills at the dedication of the bridge. I have not shot or edited video properly in almost six years, but I shot and edited two videos today, in addition to taking the photos, which is extremely challenging when you don't have a tripod and you're being crowded out by three broadcast news teams.

Anyway, all of this is an elaborate build up to links to the two articles with either my photos (one of which is the front page tomorrow) or videos. Ta da :)

(this video is much more interesting, and prettier. not perfect, but certainly decent considering the conditions)

(this was shot in the conference room of the paper, and so as to avoid the camera shaking, i propped it up on the table and left it throughout the hour long interview. he has a lot to say about everything. this video makes him sound fairly concise. it took me six hours to do so.)

I'll go ahead and post the photo, so you don't have to scrounge around for it, but the videos can't be embedded or linked.
