Jack was beginning to find ways of fitting in around the house. He'd claimed a couch to sleep on, which suited him just fine until something or somewhere else came up. After a bit of trial and error, he'd managed to get the laundry machines running to get his suit cleaned. And he'd found the liquor cabinet. He'd needed that, after the conversation ( Read more... )

Liz almost stood on the man sitting on the steps, on her way out to return to her TARDIS - or, more accurately, the TARDIS she stayed in - for a decent night's sleep. Not that sleep came easily to anyone, these days. The universe had all but ended, and they were stuck. It didn't exactly encourage sweet dreams.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" she exclaimed, stumbling, but, since it was, technically, her fault, happy to accept the blame for once. "I didn't hurt you, did I?"

For his part, Jack tended to view minor hurts as something pointless to be angry over, considering how he could have once ended up, so he was quick to assure the woman no harm had been done.

"Not at all, miss," he said, automatically standing up when he saw the person who'd run into him was indeed a woman; old etiquette died hard.

Liz smiled, partly out of relief and partly because she was a little surprised by his slightly old-fashioned politeness. Being called 'miss' wasn't usually something that sat well with her, but there were people here from every conceivable time period. If he was even further from his own time than she was, it would hardly be helpful of her to call him on his mannerisms.

"Liz, please," she said, gently, "Are you sure you're alright? Or, at least, moderately alright? Drinking alone doesn't generally create the most positive of images..."

Jack blinked at her in confusion for a moment before remembering the liquor bottle he was still holding by the neck. He hadn't bothered to see what kind of alcohol it even was, but it burned his throat nicely, so it suited him just fine.

"Oh," he replied, somewhat dumbly. "Well, it's been some time since I had anything like a proper Earth pint. And being on Earth hasn't made me very alright."

He sat back down on the steps, swinging the bottle between his fingers, and resumed his contemplation of the yard. Normally he would have thought to ask her to sit first.

"It looks very different," he said after a moment. "But still very much the same. I wonder how much Godalming will have changed."

Fitz had been leaning on the wall when the man came out. For the moment, all Fitz registers is Alcohol.

"You gonna drink that by yourself?"

Jack started slightly and looked in Fitz's direction, squinting until his eyes adjusted. Then he settled himself down on the steps.

"That was the idea, yes."

Fitz is vaguely visible by the light of his fag.
"Damn. There's a no-booze-for-Fitz conspiracy, I swear."

"Really?" he asked, twisting off the cap and giving the rim of the bottle a sniff. His eyes watered madly. Good choice. "The liquor cabinet's quite full and there's no lock on it."
