...not with a bang, but a whimper.

He felt it in the core of his being, long before there were any visible signs. There was a subtle shift in the universe as it surrounded him. Subtle, but in entirely the wrong direction.

Adam muttered an oath, and summoned every bit of concentration and determination, focusing his energies and attentions as far and wide as he could. He visualised himself reaching out and closing the universe in his fist, protecting it.

They'd failed.

They'd failed, and the whole of time and space was collapsing in on itself. The proverbial house coming down 'round their proverbial ears.

He held on as best he could. But the universe has its checks and balances and even a being that is for all intents and purposes all-powerful can only hold so much. Things still slip through one's fingers, even when the fingers in question are eternal.

The palm he envisioned opened to reveal just the Milky Way galaxy.

"Sodding hell," he muttered, opening his eyes. "Right. Looks like Plan B time, yeah? Another timeline, another go."

He canted his head, sensing the state of things. A few had come through, tugged along by his grasping fingers. More would need to be summoned.

With a weary sigh, he dusted off his suit, and blinked out of sight. Next stop, London, England, Earth, 2008.
