“The republic of thieves” (Scott Lynch)

If you are a follower of author Scott Lynch (The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Sea Under Red Skies) then you’ll be happy for news on the the long awaited sequel The Republic of Thieves. Amazon has an entry claiming it’ll be available in February of 2011.

Now, please don’t take Amazon’s guesstimates on book release dates as “Word of God”, because they aren’t. With nearly a year for things to wrong, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the book still hasn’t been release on the aforementioned date. Consider this extremely advance notice. Mark your calendar, so you can pull your nose out of whatever trash novel you’ve been biding your time with, and look around for the release of a truly captivating story. Good quality fiction is worth the wait, and dammit all, Scott is quality.

If you are new to the series and want a taste, you can read an excerpt (the whole first chapter, actually) over at Scott’s website.

Speaking of which -- while trolling through Scott’s site, I discovered that he’s under contract to Orion Books for “six novels, no more and no less; five of them are Books I-V of the Gentleman Bastard sequence and the sixth is an unrelated work cleverly referred to as Untitled Lynch Number One.”  His website has place holders for SEVEN Gentleman Bastard novels (Yippie!), but I’m unclear on who would be releasing the last two. Maybe it’s just a case of “Whoops! I wrote that FAQ page aeons ago, and haven’t been keeping it up to date.”  (Having written documentation for work, I can sympathize with how difficult it can be to keep things in synch. Beside, if Scott’s writing, I’d rather it be stuff for which he’ll get paid!) You can read more of what Scott has to say over at his LJ page.

If you haven’t read his first two novels, you should hit the links above and either buy them now, or add them to your wish list. You won’t be disappointed.
