Cross Channel Swim

Sep 02, 2008 09:43

Took the yacht out to do safety patrol for the Cross Channel Swim. Photos are here. Wind was the antagonist. We had a hard time keeping the bow where we wanted it. Other kayaks were more maneuverable, but we were able to play sheepdog (our usual role) and steer swimmers into the lane so the didn't end up swimming to the rocks rather then the beach. One swimmer who rested on our bow apparently is an Admiral, just back from Afghanistan - he's the one in the pics. He did most of the event on his own, but we paddled him a couple hundred yards so that he could finish strong. Three women who were floating together chatted with us as we paddled back and forth, but never needed a break and finished smiling. The guy towing the inflatable croc apparently does that every year, but the shark was new.

And I moved the compost heap, harvesting a wheelbarrow load of soil for the side garden. Thus goeth my holiday weekend.
