The man passed his hand through his silky, honey-blonde hair, sighing. Work had been hard today, he thought. His boss had been after him the whole day. “Uruha, get your sorry ass over here!” “Haven’t you done this one yet?” and had smacked his head with the file in his hand. Geez, his boss was taking advantage of him lately. Turning round the corner of the alleyway, “I’ll take a hot shower and crawl under the covers! Sounds good.” he spoke aloud to himself. But his stomach definitely did not agree with the plan-growling loudly. He blushed slightly, looking around if anyone had heard. Luckily, he was alone. He looked at his watch. “I’ll swing by the park and grab something to eat then.”

Approaching the park from far, Uruha could see children running around and playing. Parents were sitting on benches and chatting among themselves. The weather was pretty fair-the wind was blowing slightly and the sun peeked through the clouds from time to time. He was passing behind the fence of the park, looking for the nearest entrance when suddenly his brain was receiving messages from his nose. It smells nice! he thought. Following the scent, he finally found an entrance and strolled by a number of food stalls. His hands in his pockets, he inspected the merchants before deciding.

That one’s not wearing gloves.

That one hasn’t shaved.

This one isn’t draining off the food long enough.

That one’s stall needs a scrub.

Make up your fucking mind, Uruha!

He finally stopped in front of a stall which was smelling nice and was very pleasant to the nose. No one was buying anything here. He had always been picky on buying food outside-which was why he always ended up in a restaurant. No time for that today. The booth was red and white, giving it an attractive look. He walked to the merchant who was busy cooking. He had a cook’s hat on his head and was wearing gloves and an apron and drained off his food well.

He watched the man well. He was placing the cakes on a tissue-covered plate and covered it with a sort of food net. He took a bowl and spooned some of the mixture in the frying pan. After the man had finished filling the pan, he kept the bowl aside and washed his gloved hands. Yes! Somebody who cares about hygiene, Uruha cheered silently. His stomach suddenly growled again, catching the man’s attention.

“Sorry! I didn’t notice you!” the cook laughed. He was a bit young, had jet-black hair and deep, brown eyes.

“No, it’s my fault! I, well, sort of crept up waiting for you to finish.” Uruha laughed nervously.

“Well, would you like to buy something? You sounded hungry. And by the way, just call me Kai,” said the cook.

Uruha blushed slightly before asking. “So Kai, what is it that you are selling?” he asked. He pointed to the empty plates on display.

“Oh shit! I forgot to fill the plates again!” Kai exclaimed. He quickly replaced the empty plates with two filled ones.

“I’ve never seen this cake before,” Uruha commented. The small cake looked healthy but was new to the honey-blonde’s eyes.

“Oh, this is a family recipe which my mother created.” He took one from the plate and handed it to the honey-blond. “Here, try one for free.”

Uruha took the cake and popped it in his mouth. Seeing his unchanged expression, Kai apologised-thinking that he did not like it.

Uruha shook his head vigorously. “No, no, it’s delicious!” he exclaimed. It was really, very tasty. Relief was obvious on the cook’s face. “I’m taking ten more! To bring home.” he replied.

He waited and chatted with Kai while he put the cakes in a paper bag. “No, make that thirteen. I’ll eat some on the way home,” Uruha said. Kai just laughed and added three more to the bag.

After handing Uruha the bag, Kai directed him to pay with his brother. Kai looked around for him. “Don’t tell me he fell asleep again,” Kai groaned.

Looking closely in the stall, Uruha spotted a form in a chair in the corner. “Isn’t that him?” he asked, pointing in front. Kai turned around and sighed. He walked over to his brother and shook him lightly.

Bending, Kai whispered in his ear, “Ruki, wake up.” No reaction. Uruha smiled. Kai bent again, this time Uruha heard him saying, “Otherwise the doughnuts are gone.”

That did the trick. Ruki’s eyes snapped open and he shouted “Noo!” Uruha suppressed a laugh at the scene.

“Come on, we’ve got a customer,” Kai said. ”Go!” Kai pushed his brother lightly in the back. Ruki walked to the counter and scratched the back of his head. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled.

Uruha was struck by the soft naivety of the man approaching the counter. He was slim and short but couldn’t make out much more of the brother.

“What if he was a bad guy? He could have run away while I was waking you up,” Kai grumbled, shaking his head.

“As if I’d do that!” Uruha said. He took out some money from his wallet and handed it to Ruki.

“This is my baby brother, Ruki.” He told Uruha. “He took thirteen,” Kai supplied for his brother.

“I’m not a baby, Kai! And thirteen? That’s pretty a lot,” Ruki exclaimed. Uruha found that he liked his voice.

“To me you’ll always be a baby!” Kai said affectionately, ruffling his hair. He went back to his cooking.

“Well, I sort of liked it,” Uruha admitted sheepishly.

Ruki smiled knowingly and began counting the money. Being in front of him, Uruha surveyed him better. He had brown eyes like his brother but had probably dyed his hair. His hair was a soft blond and silky, swaying when the wind blew. He’s like an angel, Uruha thought. He couldn’t bring himself to tear his eyes away from the mystical being in front of him.

“Is something wrong?” Ruki asked. Uruha snapped back to reality, blushing for the third time that day. He realised he had been staring at the practical perfection of the smaller blond.

“No, no, nothing,” he said, looking away.

“Here you are,” Ruki said, handing him his change.

“Thank you. This is not the last time you’ll see me! And by the way, I’m Uruha.” he said holding out his hand. Ruki shook his hand. Wow. Soft. “You sounded like a bad guy right now!” he laughed. “I’m Ruki. Oh right, Kai already told you.” He smiled again. Uruha didn’t want to let go. Instead, he wanted to lean forward and-He mentally smacked himself before forcing himself to release the hand. Was Ruki as well holding on to his hand?

He sighed to himself. “See ya!” Uruha waved.

He began walking away. It was a habit of his to check his change after purchasing something. Counting his money, he realised that Ruki had returned him extra. He returned on his steps to return the excess. He felt an unfamiliar feeling on knowing that he would see Ruki again. What am I thinking of? he scolded himself.

He saw Kai and told him what had happened. Kai called for his brother. Ruki came out and a smile appeared on his face on seeing Uruha.

Uruha held out his hand, the excess cash in his palm. Ruki looked at him questioningly. “Don’t fall asleep next time. I can see that it affects your ability to count,” he joked.

Ruki felt guilty for some unknown reason. Sensing his distress, Uruha placed his hand on top of Ruki’s trying to comfort him. Flashing Uruha a smile, he knew that he had been successful. “I’ll come again. Be careful next time!”

The next day, Uruha finished work earlier. Seeing that he had nothing to do, he decided to go for a walk. The smell of foods suddenly invaded his nose again. Ruki! His heart leapt slightly upon remembering the smaller blond. Uruha unknowingly increased his speed and finally slowed some steps before the familiar stall.

Wow, he thought. There was a long queue in front where Kai was cooking, waiting to be served, and a lot of people in front of Ruki paying. Compared to the previous day, the place was bustling. Uruha waited last in Ruki’s queue just to say hi after the guy in front of him went away. After some long minutes, it was finally the turn of the man in front of him. The client was checking his change and turning at the same time to leave. Uruha could have sworn he had seen the man grin.

Uruha placed his hand on the man’s shoulder, stopping him. “Uruha!” Ruki exclaimed. “You cam-“he continued but was stopped by the honey-blond. “Wait a minute,” Uruha said. He turned his attention to the last client.

“How many did you take?” Uruha asked suspiciously.

“Huh? Why do yer have to know, ey?” the man asked gruffly. Uruha gave him such a glare that he answered, “Six.”

“And how much money did you give to him?” Uruha pointed to Ruki with his other hand. By this time, Kai’s attention had also been caught. He was listening warily.

“What’s yer fucking problem?” the man practically yelled. He was tensing and obviously considering escape but on realising that Uruha was much taller than him, he relaxed faintly and replied.

Uruha opened his clenched fist containing the change and counted the money on the counter. “What are you doing? Give me back my damn money you thief!” the man shouted. Uruha ignored him and gave him half of the money. “Now go,” he simply said.

“You stole my money and yer expect me to fuckin’ leave?”

“You counted the damn money and you didn’t realise that the an-” Whoops. Uruha was about to say angel. He quickly corrected himself saying “the blond over here returned you twice you the amount needed?”

Out of the corner of his eye, Uruha saw Ruki’s eyes widen slightly. Recognizing that if he continued to argue he would look like a complete idiot, the man slapped Uruha’s hand away and fled like a coward. Uruha shook his head muttering something that neither Ruki nor Kai could catch.

“You should be careful, Ruki! Who knows how many people have gotten away with it? You look tired these days, maybe we should take a break for a little time,” Kai said softly. He pulled him in a hug.

“No, I’ll do better, I promise!” Ruki answered, a smile replacing the sad expression on his innocent face.

Kai turned to Uruha. “Um, thank you Uruha-san,” said Ruki, looking ashamed. Uruha felt sorry for him and wanted to hug him but Kai interrupted his thoughts by thanking him profusely.

“Thank you a lot, Uruha-san! We had never noticed before… thank you very much!” he gave him a friendly hug which Uruha gladly returned. Ruki who still standing nearby couldn’t hold himself and threw himself on the two.

“Yay! Bear hug!” he squealed happily. Uruha had never imagined he would get to be this close to the little angel. He hugged the both a bit more closely, sighing in happiness.

“This is like teletubbies,” commented Kai with a giggle.

“Yeah, and you’re Tinky Winky!” Ruki said to Uruha, a playful grin on his plush lips.

“What? That blue guy?!” Uruha said in mock disbelief. “If that’s the case, then Kai’s the yellow one - Lala,” said Uruha, suppressing a laugh.
