this is my kinda boring weekend post. with conference stuff included:
thursday i drove to san antonio straight from work and instead of staying with my sister i ended up staying with heather bru at her mom's house with tori. i bought an air mattress that ended up costing as much as a stupid hotel =/
we went to the industry- basically a goth nightclub in san antonio. one of the strangest experiences i have had at a nightclub, for sure.
after that weird thing we went to baker street and played pool until last call- then went to a san antonio version of taco cabana that mama something? idk. anyway best quesadilla ever.
kansas drunk dialed me at 3 or 4 am and we talked for a long time. bad decision because i stayed up so late that i could barely get up the next morning. i think i finally rolled out of bed at 930 or so to shower and pack up my stuff and deflate the air mattress.
got to the conference- everyone was wearing suits... even the young people. after talking to my professor i realize that basically everyone treats this like a job interview because they are hoping to get jobs.
weird to know this after the fact because i thought this was just a scholarly or hobby-oriented conference with some networking- not a giant competition for jobs?
i wore a casual dress with a cardigan. showed my tattoos. kinda felt out of place but i was not getting stared at thankfully.
i ended up buyin $175 worth of books on the first day. i think i bought a total of $220 worth the whole weekend.
by showing up late both days i missed some of the best sessions that started at 830 =/
here are the paper sessions i attended:
--"Not Created Equal: The Influence of Mass Production on the Choice of Coin Types in Roman Mints" (Coinage and Art: techniques and production)
--"The Eyes Have it: Targeted Marketing and Athenian Eye Vessels Abroad" (Greek Pottery)
--"The Role of Ruvo di Puglia in the Trans-Apennine Shipment of Attic Pottery" (Greek Pottery)
--"Tragedy and the Catharsis of Modernity: From Plato to Bernays, via Longinus and Schiller" (Tragedy and Modernity)
--"Pottery from the Late Hellenistic Shipwreck at Kizilburun, Turkey" (Seafaring and Ceramics)
--"The Archaic Temple of Poseidon at Sounion: New Discoveries" (Greek Temple Architecture)
--"The Old Temple of Athena on the Athenian Acropolis in Context"(Greek Temple Architecture
--"Teaching the Homeric Gods" (The Pedagogy of Homeric Poetry)
--"Clash of the Epics: Using Film to Teach the Iliad" (The Pedagogy of Homeric Poetry)
--"Odysseus Ancient and Modern: Juxtaposition as a Pedagogical Tool" (The Pedagogy of Homeric Poetry)
I would have gone to a lot more had I shown up on time... and actually had gone to the conference on sunday. but i still had a great time. the eye vessel session was the best one by far.... but that's the only session that i attended that was given by an art historian. go figure.
anyway- friday after the conference i drove to austin- and arrived at my new home for the night- reeda's trailer! in the middle of austin.
kinda weird and awesome at the same time. i didnt even end up seeing reeda at all. she didn't come home and i left early the next day to go back to SA for the conference. i went to saigon kitchen because veggie heaven was closed. then i went to the one against many, venomous maxiumus, black congress, ratking, power trip show at red 7. mainly hung out with heatherbru and danny gersch. talked to eric for a bit but i think i may have made that awkward. i dont know? i am glad we are friends again- it just may take me a while to get used to being around him. he makes me extremely nervous for some reason? the show was good aside from me feeling like a zombie the entire time. got back to the trailer and stayed there by myself. it was actually really really comfortable. kansas drunk dialed me again and kept me up later than i needed to be.
i got curra's tamales on saturday at like 1030am and drove to san antonio. note to self: do not eat tamales while driving.
after i left the conference i didn't feel like going to back to austin- especially since i had nothing to do. reeda wanted me to go to a tattoo convention but that didnt sound like fun and i wasnt looking forward to another show in austin (Garuda). i drove home so i could watch football and hang out with my friends in houston. kinda ended up being a shitty night but whatever...
i should mention that i decided yesterday that i am going to UH for my masters. i'll figure out the phd later. but i spoke at length about the program with the interim dean and he helped ease my concerns about the possibility of considerable overlap of my ancient classes from undergrad to grad... everything has been smoothed out and now i'm actually relieved that i get to take more classical studies courses with my favorie professor at UH. into it.
moving into a house with chomiak and carlos is still happening but there may be a new development on that whole dynamic.... i'll find out soon if it's happening or not.
