Most importantly, Sanji is a dreamer. He has been since he was little and first heard the fish tales and legends of All Blue, and still is, even though he has told himself that, logically, of course these things don’t exist. It doesn’t stop him from dreaming that they do, though, and it doesn’t slow him down in his ambitions to be the world’s greatest chef.
COMPUTER APTITUDE: He is an epic fail with technology not related to cooking. Everything he touches breaks. His solution to problems involving computers is to mash every button and see what happens. He has at least figured out how to work his phone properly and can even pull off the occasional video post, but other than that he has no idea what he's doing with them. He's also one of the slowest texters ever.
AU HISTORY: Sanji was born France on March 2nd, 1991. What happened to his parents after that is unknown, but somehow, not long after, he showed up in the French foster care system. He grew up in an orphanage as a mostly normal if sometimes angry or mildly violent child. One day, as a punishment for hitting another boy, he was given duty working with the cook in the orphanage’s kitchen. Surprisingly, he actually enjoyed watching her cook, and soon he was allowed to help around the kitchen after school.
The cook, seeing that the boy had an obvious talent, made a deal with a man she knew who worked in the kitchen on a Mediterranean cruise ship, The Orbit. The ship took Sanji, then eight years old, on as an apprentice/dish washer, and he worked there for a year, learning more and more about cooking while also building a future career for himself.
During that time, Sanji had a rather blasé attitude toward food. He took it for granted, trusting that enough would always be there, and if they ran out, they could stop at port for more. Also during this time, he began learning English, and was mostly fluent by the end of his first year.
And, most importantly, he was told the legend of All Blue, a pocket of the Pacific Ocean where all the world’s seawater fish could be found in one bountiful place. A chef’s dream, to fish in these waters and make culinary masterpieces. The young cook declared that he would find it one day, but was ridiculed by the other chefs for having such a silly and childish dream.
One night just around dinnertime, a pirate ship, captained by the infamous Red Leg Zeff, attacked The Orbit, boarding the defenseless ship and demanding that the cruise goers hand over all their valuables. The passengers complied, scared witless.
Sanji was also frightened, and he got the impression that the pirates were going to kill them all. Declaring that he would not die here, he took up a kitchen knife and made a desperate attack on Captain Zeff, only to be dismissively kicked against the cabin wall. Despite being half-paralyzed from pain, Sanji continued fighting, biting Zeff in the leg and clinging to him. He mumbled around his mouthful that he refused to die until he had found All Blue, causing the pirate crew to laugh at him.
All of them but the captain.
Sanji was again kicked to the side, and this time he was so hurt he really couldn’t move. Zeff ordered that his crew gather up the rest of the valuables and move out, reprimanding them when they tried to steal some of the ships’ food. And just when things looked at their bleakest, they got worse: a giant storm blew in suddenly, whipping up the waves and violently rocking the waves.
Zeff ordered his crew back to their ship, which they quickly made to obey. The waves rose higher and higher, and one of them washed right over the side of the cruise ship. Everyone grabbed onto something and held it out, except for Sanji, who, unable to move, was swept into the sea.
And, to everyone’s astonishment, Captain Zeff, the pirate, dove in after him.
