PERSONALITY cont'd: She's not all bad though! Maybe. There's a softer side, if it can be called that, somewhere buried under all the hate, but don't expect to get to it easily. Or at all. Kaoru is incredibly paranoid and suspicious of everyone, constantly making harsh judgments at the slightest offense. She's utterly baffled by any attempts at kindness, simply because she truly, honestly believes that no one could ever like her; that no one should, and rightfully. But the truth is that beneath all the anger and contempt she presents she is a just hurt, lonely little girl. She's scared; of the world, of other people, of herself. It is not true maliciousness that motivates her, but rather a lifetime of rejection and pain. If you spent your whole life being told that you shouldn't have been born, what choice do you have but to believe it?
If someone does manage to befriend her though, crack through the armor and convince her that they really do care, her personality does a complete 180. Her disinterest turns into shyness and her contempt becomes awkward affection. She'll still hurl some casual abuse their way but it will be more playful. She becomes clingy and desperate, especially if she ever thinks she's at risk of losing the person. You could say she's loyal but that might not be entirely accurate. Rather, if she gains any sort of interest or fondness in someone, she would destroy anyone who dares hurt them without remorse. She has severe attachment and domination issues, rapidly becoming terrified when she feels things are out of her control. She would never abandon you, but she might try to keep you all to herself and scare off any other friends you have.
Basically? Kaoru is VERY messed up in the head. It's difficult for her to interact normally with people, much less form relationships, but it's certainly not impossible. She just needs a little love. Er, a lot of love. A LOT. This girl is a heaping load of Issues with a bucket of angst on top and pinch of a sociopathic garnish. But all she wants is a hug.
COMPUTER APTITUDE: Basic. She hasn't had the opportunity to use computers much in her life, but she's sharp and can figure it out pretty easily. No hacking and no fancy filters though.
AU HISTORY: Looking at the first few years of Kaoru's life, it should have been perfect. Born to a fairly well-off businessman and his wife in the heart of Tokyo, Kaoru was, at first, a sunny little girl with an affectionate nature and a love for animals and dolls and pretty dresses. This didn't last long. In fact, things had been going south since the day she was born.
Kaoru's mother was the source of the trouble. To say she wasn't in her right mind would be an understatement. She suffered from schizophrenia, and her mental condition deteriorated rapidly after the birth of her daughter. She began to have delusions that she blamed on Kaoru, insisting the girl had some kind of unnatural powers. When asked, she would point to the girl's eyes - dark, chilling eyes that always set her on edge - or the way animals seemed to have an strange affinity for the child, coming to her as though summoned.
In truth, there was nothing wrong with Kaoru. But her mother was very quickly becoming unable to see it. The woman found it hard to even play the part of a loving mother in front of others. She never looked at her daughter fondly, and she never touched her if she could help it. Whenever she thought Kaoru wasn't listening she would cry and insist that the girl wasn't human, that she shouldn't have been born. The young Kaoru heard all of it, of course. It was the first of many scars on her heart.
