CHARACTERS: Trever Daly and Jennifer Walters LOCATION/SETTING: The stables DATE & TIME: Thursday at 5 pm WARNINGS: None currently... SUMMARY: Jennifer comes to the stables with her first private riding lesson with Trever.
Trever made sure that all the students were skedalled before five, so the only occupants are the horses and a few lounging barn cats.
He comes out of his office, pulling on a pair of work gloves with a black cat trailing at his feet. He looks like something from one of those old cowboy cigarette ads wearing a flannel shirt, well worn jeans and thick work boots. His hair is messy and he's a bit on the gritty side, but he's been with the animals all day so it's to be expected.
When he sees Jennifer, he smiles and calls out a greeting.
Looking up, she heard the sound of boots coming towards her and the greeting. Taking her hand from the horse's nose and feeling odd but wiping it on her pants, Jennifer stood, waiting patiently.
Wiping horse snot is one of the reasons why Trever said she should wear old clothes.
He gives her a good once over, it's completely professional. He's making sure the horse he picked out for her was a good match. "We start with the basics. I've got a horse tied up outside for you to look at. You're going to get the full experience."
Jennifer could not help but smile just a little at that, unable to resist a chance to tease him just a moment. "I do know what a horse looks like."
She headed for the door though. "The full experience is probably a good idea. I do really want to learn this. It's not something that comes up in L.A. or New York."
"I don't let anyone on a horse unless they know how to do some basic horse care and know safety. It's all part of it," Trever says, his accent nice and thick, even if completely forgotten to put into writing. "And no, those cities not have much in the way of horses."
"Probably a good idea. I'd prefer to know how to care for the horse too. Then I feel less guilty about expecting him or her to carry me around on his or her back." Jennifer said, walking out of the stables with him.
Outside a horse is tied to the outside of the riding ring, his tail flickering back and forth smacking lazily at a a few flies. He twitches an ear as they approach, but otherwise not appearing to be bothered by their existence. He's not wearing a saddle though there are two resting on the railing - one English and the other Western.
"It also saves me a lot of trouble when there's more than one student I have to deal with at a time."
Jennifer walked up to the horse, petting it gently on the head, smiling as the creature seemed to like, or rather, not mind her being there. "Hopefully I'll be a good student."
"If you're not, I'll just whap you on the ass with the riding crop," Trever says with a complete and utterly straight face.
The cat that was following him leaps up onto the railing and pads over to the horse. She pats the horse on the nose with a paw and then leaps onto the horse's back.
"I might have to object at that. Do remember I am a lawyer." She replied, paying attention to the horse so that he could not see that she was smiling, just a little.
"Well hello there." Jennifer said softly, watching the cat. "You must be the trouble maker. Pleased to meet you."
"She's very pretty." Jennifer said, shaking her head. "Destruction of property carries a maximum sentence of four years. Keep that in mind, little cat."
Not at all offended by the cat's lack of interest in her, she looked at the saddles. "Okay, let's get this lesson started."
"Does it count if its your own property?" Trever asks. "Because cats think that everything is theirs."
He plucks the cat off the horse and drops her onto the ground. She gives him a miffed look and stalks off somewhere.
"Indeed. First part of the lesson, parts of the horse." He runs his hand along the horse's side listing off the various body parts, and showing her how to lift up a horse's foot as he does so. "This is probably the most important thing to know. Especially since you'll have to check their hooves before and after you get on."
Jennifer carefully touched the horse, running her hand along his side, smiling as she feels the animal breathing. Turning her attention onto the hoof, she nodded as he explained that she would have to check them each time. "Why do I do that?"
"To make sure they're clean. There's a pick..." He looks around for a moment and then finds a hoof pick. "Ah here..." He takes it and starts to scrape away at the insides of the hoof, getting out some accumulated gunk. "You need to make sure they're clean so there's no rocks or anything. A horse can seriously injure their feet with a rock caught up in the hoof and no one noticing it."
Jennifer leaned over his shoulder, probably closer than she should of, so that she could watch him clean out the hoof, listening attentively. "...I had no clue. There's a lot more to this than I thought."
