[ The other tables are conveniently taken. And his brother was nowhere to be seen. Of course, he could always find the people he know, but...they're all with their friends and he's too shy to join them. The half-empty tables was out of the question either - some of them was filled with the people he'd rather avoid, and the rest was filled with the people he don't know. After some consideration, he's plopping down in front of Yufu with his lunch tray (not containing those icky French food). ]

I hope this seat isn't taken.

[ One stranger is better than a bunch of them. And it sucks being a transfer student, isn't it? ]

[ looks up from her lunch and her letter, blinking a few times at the person who had decided to sit across from her before shaking her head and returning to whatever she was doing. ]

I hereby declared this as the association of socially awkward penguins. linefaceism July 2 2011, 09:57:10 UTC
[ That's sufficient response for Eiríkur. Probably not for other people, but well, he can understand being shy. Birds of a feather flock together, anyway. Or something along that line. At least, she seemed shy to him. There's a shitload of silence after that, and the only noises he's going to make has something to do with his lunch. After a while, though, he stopped eating and stole a glance at whatever it is she was doing. Was she writing something? ]

Not very chatty?

[ She'd managed to prod his curiosity and it's probably a prologue. He can't just go ahead and ask like some nosy jerk, right? But that's not his only reason - he's probably trying to break the ice as well. ]

[ a letter. to her best friend. in china. as he speaks to her again, though, she looks up from her letter and shakes her head. she really wasn't the chatty type. ]

[ If she's writing in Japanese, then chances are, he had no idea what she was writing. Even if he peered in close enough, he still wouldn't get it. Not that he's peering at her letter in the first place, because that'd be impolite and the best way to ruin this little thing called first impression. Not that he cared about petty things like that (read: he does care, but he won't admit it). He's assuming that she's writing something rather personal, though. ]

That's okay. [ He'll take that as a "yes". ] I'm not the chatty type either.

[ He's more chatty than her, it seems. Somehow. He had no idea that it's possible. He stared at her for a while before resuming eating. ]

What are you writing? If it's okay to ask. If not, don't mind me.

[ Shrugs. ]

/o/ just wait until the winter, i'll bet these two will have epic snowball fights song_of_snow July 2 2011, 10:29:43 UTC
[ she stops writing momentarily and lifts her sandwich with her other hand. ]

My best friend lives in China.

[ weird way to answer a question, but Yufu obviously seems to think it's good enough. she takes another bite of her sandwich and continues writing. ]

\o\! and by that, you mean they'll sit down and write songs about an epic snowball fight? linefaceism July 2 2011, 10:55:16 UTC
[ It's not a problem for him, he's good at putting pieces together. It's a good thing that she finally spoke to him, anyway. It'd be absurd, not to mention awkward, if she only answered him with gestures. Unless she can't talk or something along that line. There's some thoughtful pause as he ponders about Yufu's answer, all while finishing his food. That Philosophy class sure takes up a lot of energy. ]

And you're...writing something to her?

[ The words were accompanied by a raised eyebrow, and he drank some water before leaning back on his seat. His gaze were fixed on her. It's hard to tell what he was thinking or feeling, though. ]

well, that, and actually having snowball fights. this girl could live in the snow. song_of_snow July 2 2011, 10:58:30 UTC
[ she nods her head to confirm that, putting down her pencil and taking another bite of her sandwich. she could feel his eyes on her, and she could only respond by staring right back at him.

... and eating her sandwich. and quite possibly making things more awkward. ]

and he practically invented the snow. perfect. |D linefaceism July 2 2011, 11:13:32 UTC
[ It's like a world without sound or something. Except not really, because: a) the rest of the cafetaria is noisy and b) he's going to break the silence soon. ]

Why not sent her an e-mail?

[ It's infinitely more practical to him, but there is a certain...feeling with writing letters, and he can understand that. He tore away his gaze after the question, effectively putting an end to the awkward staring contest. He's going to glance around instead, trying to spot anything interesting. Anything else that's interesting, anyway, because she managed to caught his interest. ]

win-win situation, here. |D song_of_snow July 2 2011, 11:17:27 UTC
It's more personal this way.

[ oh, good, it's not so awkward anymore. staring contest over. she continues to eat in-between talking to him, though there isn't much talking going on over on her end of the conversation. ]

hell yes win-win situation B) linefaceism July 2 2011, 11:30:28 UTC
I see. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference.

[ That gives him an idea. Maybe he should try to send a letter some time instead of e-mail to his best friend back home in Norway. But it's impractical, and god only knows how much Eiríkur loves technology. And hates impracticality, but with him, it's never certain. One day he might declare how much he loathed letters, the next day, you'll find him writing one.

Silence falls. He wished he'd bring a book. He finished off his drink and pulled out his iPod. Not sure if he's going to listen to it, though, since he's still expecting her to continue their conversation. ]

[ Eiríkur stared at her for a short while afterwards, before shrugging, tucked in his earphones, and turned on his iPod. A couple of seconds later, he's busy drumming his fingers on the table to the rhythm and probably humming along, as well, temporarily forgotten Yufu's presence. He doesn't want to distract her further, anyway. ]

[ Hey, there's nothing to see here. Except that it's actually pretty amusing to watch him, but "pretty amusing" is rather subjective. After some time, he pulled out one of the earphones and shamelessly, unexpectedly, break the silence: ]

What's your name?

[ This is like. The awkwardest situation of them all. He doesn't even know why he's still staying and trying. Probably because he's sort-of pitied her. He would say that he had never seen her around before, but he'd just transferred a short while ago, so maybe he just haven't ran into her. ]
