“Alright, Noah, this is our last appointment. Your eyes are working perfectly again, thanks to me,” Reid said to the brunette sitting on the exam table. “Do you have any questions?”

Noah looked up at his doctor. He still couldn’t believe his vision had returned and it was because of this man. Well, Luke too because he blackmailed Reid into coming to Oakdale. He knew he needed to talk to Luke, to thank him for not giving up.

“No, Dr. Oliver. I don’t have any questions. I know saying thank you isn’t enough for what you’ve done for me. But, thank you so much. You gave me my life back. I felt like everything was on hold when I was blind. It was like I was standing still and everybody was rushing past me.”

“So you felt like your life was on hold and you expected Luke to put his life on hold too?” Reid couldn’t stop himself from asking Noah.

The brunette’s body was tense. He looked at Reid, but he couldn’t read his facial expression. The doctor projected a calm exterior. Noah felt like there were many emotions wanting to come out.

“My relationship with Luke is none of your business,” Noah said tersely.

Reid thought about how to answer the brunette. Since Noah was no longer his patient, he could finally say everything he’d been wanting to say for months.

“You’re an idiot, Mr. Mayer.”

Noah was confused. “Excuse me?”

“Do you know how rare it is to meet a man like Luke? Someone who is incredibly compassionate, generous, passionate, and selfless. It is even rarer to be loved by a man like that. Yet, you had Luke and you pushed him away. So, I’ll repeat myself since you didn’t understand the first time,” Reid spoke slowly so Noah could understand him. “You are an idiot.”

“I just needed space. He was smothering me,” Noah weakly defended himself. He knew he hurt Luke, but he was hoping he could make it up to him. Everything would be better now that his vision was restored. Noah knew that Luke would forgive him because Luke loved him and he had a big heart.

Reid looked at Noah with contempt. “Yes, how dare he love you and try to take care of you in your time of need,” he said with his voice dripping with sarcasm. “I have performed many surgeries. Not once have I ever seen a patient push away a loved one to deal with his ailment alone. Every patient of mine has been extremely grateful for the support of love ones. All except for you. You have no family yet you reject the one person who loves you unconditionally.”

Noah turned away from Reid. He didn’t want to listen to him anymore, yet he was still confused. “Why are you saying this? You hate Luke.”

“Actually, I don’t.”

Noah’s head snapped up in shock. “Since when?”

“It turns out my preconceived impression of Luke was wrong. While working with him on the new wing, I grew to admire and respect him.”

“Ok, but that still doesn’t give you the right to lecture me about my relationship with Luke,” Noah pointed out.

“I wasn’t finished, Mr. Mayer. The truth is I like Luke very much. I want to be with him. I’m hoping that he wants to be with me too,” Reid stated proudly. He wasn’t ashamed of his feelings for Luke. He was done hiding his emotions.

Noah was completely flabbergasted. All these questions were racing through his mind. Dr. Oliver is gay? Why hadn’t anybody told him? And he actually likes Luke? What was going on?

The doctor watched Noah’s reaction. He knew he probably should have revealed this information more gently to Noah, but he felt Noah deserved this shock for treating Luke so horribly over the last several months. It was time that the brunette learned that Luke’s life no longer revolved around Noah.

“Does Luke know that you like him?”

“I imagine he got a clue when I kissed him. If he didn’t then, he certainly knew when I told him I like him and that I want him.”

“You kissed my boyfriend?” Noah replied, anger starting to overcome his confusion.

“Ex-boyfriend, Mr. Mayer. The two of you have been broken up for months now. Luke is free to be with any man he chooses.”

“Did he choose you?” Noah asked although he wasn’t sure he wanted to know. His fingers clenched tightly into a fist. He wanted to punch Dr. Oliver for kissing Luke.

Before Reid could answer, the door opened and Luke popped his head in. He immediately noticed the tension between the two men. Noah was angry and Reid had his usual arrogant smirk on his handsome face. Luke thought that maybe he should leave them alone for now.

“Is this a bad time? Should we come back later?”

Reid looked at Luke in confusion. “Who’s we? All I see is you.”

Luke walked into the room and Richard followed him. “I ran into Richard in the lobby. He told me that you were having your last appointment today, Noah. I just wanted to stop by for a minute and see how you were doing.”

Noah just sat there staring at Luke, slowly unclenching his fist. He was so confused, and he needed answers from the blonde. Did he pick Dr. Oliver over him? Would Luke really leave him? He was pulled out of his thoughts when Richard walked over to him.

Richard put his hand on the brunette’s shoulder and smiled. “Hey, Noah.”

“Richard, I’m glad you came,” Noah said. He did like Richard, but he wasn’t Luke. He had been convinced during his long months of darkness that Luke would wait for him. As soon as he could see again, they would get back together like they were meant to.

Now, Dr. Oliver had messed things up by kissing his Luke. He looked over at the two of them. Luke had stopped next to the doctor. They stood close together, almost touching, and they were looking at each other with half-smiles on their faces. It was like they were in their own little world. Noah felt nauseous. Too many emotions were swimming around him, and the reality of the situation hit him like a punch in the gut. Looking at Luke, he knew the blonde had already made his choice, and it wasn’t him.

The blonde unwillingly looked away from Reid. Seeing that small smile on the doctor’s face caused his heart to beat faster. Luke wanted to talk to Reid, which was the reason he had come to the hospital, but he couldn’t talk to the man in front of Noah. Luke felt it would be incredibly awkward to ask Reid out for a date in front of his ex-boyfriend.

So, Luke turned his attention to the two brunettes in the room. They were talking quietly to each other. He didn’t feel hurt or jealous like the first time he saw the two men together at Al’s. Now, he could see that Richard could be good for Noah. Luke had talked to Richard in the elevator ride up to Noah’s room. He had this calm, laid-back personality that would appeal to Noah after all the drama they had been through in the last few years. Besides, Luke hoped he had Reid now. There was no need to be jealous of Noah moving on with his life because Luke was more than ready to move on with his own life.

Reid continued to watch Luke. He wanted to see the blonde’s reaction to Noah and Richard. He noticed that Luke seemed to be at ease and friendly with Richard when they walked in together, and now he could see no signs of hurt or regret on Luke’s beautifully expressive face. In fact, the blonde had a contemplative look on his face and then gave a small nod. To the doctor, it looked like Luke was giving the two men his blessing.

Reid cleared his throat, drawing the attention of the three men. “Well, Mr. Mayer, you are free to go. If you have any problems with your eyes, you have my number. Now, I have to get back to work.”

“Ok, Dr. Oliver, I know how to contact you. I don’t want to take up anymore of your time,” Noah said sarcastically.

Luke gave him a look of confusion, but Noah wouldn’t meet his eyes. Then, the blonde turned to Reid, but he was already walking towards the door. He looked back over his shoulder and met Luke’s gaze. He raised one eyebrow and gave a little shoulder shrug. Luke almost laughed out loud over Reid’s mock innocent act. He’d get the story out him later.

After Reid left the room, Luke turned back to Noah. “I’m going to leave too. Noah, I’m so happy for you. And Richard, it was good to see you again.”

“Wait, Luke!” Noah’s hand reached out. “We haven’t had a chance to talk in a while. I was hoping you had some time,” his voice trailed off.

“I can’t today, but give me a call later. We’ll have coffee and catch up,” Luke replied as he was walking towards the door. “Bye guys!”

Luke quickly walked down the hallway. He was hoping to catch Reid in his office. Taking a deep breath, he knocked on Reid’s door. He heard the doctor yell “Go away!” Luke just chuckled and opened the door.

Reid looked up in irritation as his door swung open. His mouth opened to berate the unlucky idiot who interrupted him, but his mouth quickly formed a smile as he saw Luke’s blonde head appear. He was surprised to see Luke so soon after leaving Noah’s room. He assumed the blonde would spend some time with his ex or maybe take him home. He knew Noah would try to guilt Luke into doing it.

Luke smiled as he walked into the room and shut the door behind him. He wanted some privacy as he talked to the doctor. “Hey, do you have some time to talk now?”

Reid nodded as he stood up and circled his desk. He stopped a few feet away from Luke. “I have some time. What do you want to talk about, Luke?”

“Well, I came here today to ask you if you wanted to have dinner with me tonight. So, Reid, do you?” Luke asked confidently. He knew he wanted to be with the redhead, and he was determined to let Reid know he had made his choice.

Reid was flabbergasted by Luke’s question and confidence, but this side of the blonde was attractive. “Like a date?” he checked.

“Yes, Reid, a date. You know where two people who are attracted to each other sit down, eat a meal, and have a conversation,” Luke spoke slowly as though he was talking to Ethan.

“Don’t be a smartass,” Reid instructed. “That’s my job. But yes, I will have dinner with you tonight. You’re buying,” he added with a smirk.

Luke laughed. “Since I was the one doing the asking, it was implied that I am the one buying. I’ll pick up at 6:00 pm. Wear a suit.”

“Fine. The food had better be worth it,” Reid grumbled.

Walking closer to the doctor, Luke stopped when he was mere inches from Reid. “There’s just one thing I need to do before our date.”

Reid could barely breathe with Luke this close to him, much less think enough to form a coherent response. “What?”

Luke smiled softly and cupped Reid’s cheek with his left hand. “This,” he whispered as his lips touched Reid’s. It started as a chaste, tender kiss until Reid realized what was happening and quickly began to move his lips too. The kiss escalated into an intense, passionate embrace as fingers tugged at hair and hands grabbed onto hips, shoulders, necks, anywhere they could reach.

They finally pulled apart to breathe. Reid looked at Luke’s red, swollen lips, messy blonde hair, sparkling brown eyes, and his shirt wrinkled from Reid’s tight grasp. He had never looked more gorgeous, and Reid wanted him more than he ever wanted anything before. He was scared of his feelings because he knew he wanted more than just one night with Luke. He wanted a relationship, but he doesn’t do relationships. He wanted to try though with the blonde. He wanted to take a chance and see where this thing between them could go.

While Reid was looking at the blonde, Luke was looking at the doctor. His eyes ran over the soft red hair in disarray, the blue eyes darkened in lust, the kiss-swollen lips, and his navy scrub shirt untucked from his pants. The physical attraction he had for Reid terrified him in its intensity. He had never felt this way about Noah. However, Luke also knew that what he felt for Reid was more than just lust. He wanted everything with Reid, and tonight was just the start for the two of them.

Luke smiled. “I’ll see you at six,” he said and then couldn’t stop himself from brushing his lips against Reid’s again. He walked to the door and opened it.

Before he could walk through the door, Reid called out, “See you then.”

When Luke looked back, Reid winked at him. He could hear the blonde’s laughter as he walked down the hallway. The doctor smiled to himself. He wondered what he had gotten himself into this time.
