Today I got a loverly surprise in the mail. A small, brown box with my brother-in-law's handwriting on it. Could it be, I thought, the package that Esha mentioned had come to her house instead of mine?
I opened it up after dinner and facing up was "Wolves of the Calla," book five in Stephen King's Dark Tower series. I had put the whole seven book series on my Christmas list, and this past Saturday, books six and seven had arrived. I thought that maybe my sister had bought the last ones, only, not realizing there was still one more to come. Under "Wolves of the Calla" was a box set of books 1-4. Now I have all seven!
(My only small annoyance is that they don't have the same style of cover. Not that I need them all to match- though my everyman style OCD would like it- but six and seven are done in rich color, and it bet they'd all be pretty gorgeous sitting together on my shelf.)

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?

I got a job where my supervisor is a good friend, I was interviewed by other friends, and I already knew my boss really likes me.
I moved into my own apartment.
I started working with really young children.
I drove with Corey halfway across Washington to see a concert.
I defended a process I hated.
I got high in public and had the best double quarter pounder with cheese ever.
I knit my first afghan.

2. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?

Money. Sad that that's all I can think of right now.

3. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

I put on 2 literacy events for my former elementary school, and collaborated on a district-wide one.
I didn't use terrible language in front of any small children (that I work with).

4. What was your biggest failure?

The turnout for my first literacy event was half the amount of the year before.
I didn't reserve chapter books for the older kids during our book giveaway, thus leaving them with picture books to choose from.
I didn't keep in touch with people that I should.

5. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Very minor illnesses. I didn't miss any work because of them. I did fuck up my knee, though. The lump's still there, unfortunately.

6. What was the best thing you bought?

A concert ticket to see Patton Oswalt. I laughed so incredibly hard I almost couldn't stand it.

7. Where did most of your money go?

Eating out with Corey. We go out once a week, and it's the only time we see each other, so it's worth it.

8. Compared to this time last year, you are…

I little more tired. Colder. More busy. More collaborative. Less stressed. A lot more happy about the people I work with and the children I see everyday.

9. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Partying. Hanging out with cool people I don't see much. They're still around, though, so I have more time. Also, more reading. Finding cool things in Seattle.

10. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Grumbling and suffering through my time with my coworkers last year. I wish I'd spent less of my time on the bus just trying to get around.

11. How did you spend Christmas?

I was in California with my mama and brother and those other people. For the record I spent Hanukkah working.

12. Did you fall in love in 2009?

Not even close.

13. What was your favorite TV program?

Mad Men. Followed by RuPaul's Drag Race. Oh, and The Venture Bros. And I should mention my guilty pleasure, House.

14. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Nope.

15. What was the best book you read?

I really loved The Ruins. A Clockwork Orange. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

16. What did you want and get?

To spend my birthday with friends. A bus pass. My own place. To spend time with my brother.

17. What did you want and not get?

Money. An invite to be a guest on the Colbert Report. To marry a number of celebrities.

18. What were your favorite films of this year?

Sherlock Holmes. Easy one since it was so recent. Star Trek.

19. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I ate homemade amazingness, including red velvet cake and played Scattergories with friends. I turned 24.

20. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

More money. A car plus chauffeur. Not living in Tukwila. Oh, you said only one.

21. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?

Ahahaha.

22. What kept you sane?

Sleeping for 12 hours a day over weekends, I guess?

23. What political issue stirred you the most?

Prop 8 in California.

24. Whom did you miss?

My mom and my brother. Monique and Emily and everyone else.

25. Who was the best new person you met?

It's a tie between Samwise and Max.

26. Tell us some valuable life lessons you learned in 2009.

Don't mix your own drinks.
Carry around bus schedules.
Don't run up the down escalator.
Keep not taking things seriously. It's all about perspective, and you're not a starving child in Africa by any means.

Another awesome Mario cake.
Five Reasons Pigs are more Awesome than You.
