My parents are going to Atlanta in a few days. So I decided to stay up late last night and translate a bunch of tourist maps and brochures into Chinese for them so they could find their way around and have things to do.
Did you know that writing the Chinese characters for "olympic park" or "park" over and over again is possibly the most obnoxious thing you can do to yourself at 2 am?
I also had no idea how to write "Aquarium" and I have no Chinese dictionary. I couldn't find it online either. I ended up writing multiple variations including "fish park" "fish tube" "fish place" "fish with glass" and at one point "fish restaurant" (which I realize is completely wrong, especially if you are Asian and are obsessed with eating fish). Finally I just gave up and wrote "see fish here" on the map. My mom had a fit of giggles when she saw my handiwork.
The best part is that "Aquarium" doesn't even begin with the character "fish". According to my mom it begins with the character "water". I was totally off.
But they totally appreciated it when they arrived at my place this morning and I gave them a huge pack of papers with Chinese directions written all over them. I'm glad they are willing to travel on their own.
