Happy Belated Lunar New Year Everyone!
It's the year of the Ox! Traditionally the year of your sign is supposed to be bad luck. At least that's what my parents said. I'm a rat so my year just passed. I didn't have a horrible year but I did spend a lot of it job hunting and thesis struggling without Jason. So I'm happy that I get a fresh start. Mostly I just got really excited as a kid because my parents would start a huge fire and burn lots of stuff for our ancestors during Chinese holidays. They don't do that so much anymore, my parents version of holidays only involve food now. =) They're kinda mellow people like that.
My parents and I are celebrating with Jason's family and Phuong on Wednesday and I'm way excited about seeing everyone and chowing down on home cooking. There's a massive feast involved usually.
My "lunar" new year's resolution is to not spend a dime of my lai see and save it all up. It's tradition for the elders to give us money in red envelopes every lunar new years for good luck and sometimes it's known as "lai see" depending on where you are from. Well I am horrible at saving money each month and I'm always trying to pay off my car.
So my grandma, parents, and a few others will probably give me these red envelopes and I'm putting them straight into my savings account and not touching it.
This is not part of my new year's resolution but I've been wanting to get into work earlier and leave earlier so I don't get so stressed out by traffic. Apparently my body decided to start this morning because I am leaving for work now.
