AU?

Two years before the beginning of the game, Tear--when she was finally confronted solidly that her brother was trying to do something horrible, even if she didn't fully understand what it was--picked up a blade Van himself had thrown at her feet and ran him through. In canon, the wound had not been fatal; in this AU, it had, by sheer accident.

Unhinged to the very end, Van had seen his sister's tears and, as he lay dying, sang Yulia's Hymns to comfort her, breathing his last partway through the Seventh. Legretta discovered them as Tear lay in hysterics and, understanding the situation, promptly worked on a cover-up. As Legretta began a hunt for Van's "assassin," Tear ran to Daath to try to sort through her feelings. There she encountered Fon Master Ion--the original Ion, shortly before he would have died from his terminal illness. Unknowing of how Ion, Mohs and Van had all worked together to create his replica, Tear confessed her crimes to the Fon Master, perhaps seeking either censure or forgiveness...and Ion, realizing that his plans were ruined, decided to take his dying revenge on Tear, punished her--with a Daathic arte to inscribe into her fonons the powers of a Fon Master. Being Fon Master and knowing the entirety of the Score had always made Ion suffer, so why not make this girl, Van's sister, suffer in the same way? Then perhaps she would understand why she'd been such a fool.

And so it came to pass that Fon Master Ion died, and his successor, the first ever female one, was instated as Fon Master Mystearica...

PERSONALITY:

Tear was horribly scarred by these defining incidents, which caused her to become quiet and removed and not much towards interacting with other people. She knows she's in a precarious position, and has been thrust into a role of far greater importance than she ever imagined for herself, even if once upon a time she was wondering if she'd be made into her brother's direct subordinate soon. Becoming Fon Master has been a great burden on her, even if she has done her hardest to ascend gracefully (and has been largely successful), but Tear is stubborn. She wants to do the best job she possibly can at this, largely because she still feels guilty about killing Van--for she'd committed this murder before she was completely ready for it. She knew she'd averted something much more terrible by doing this, but she'd still committed fratricide... She often suffers from troubled dreams as a result. In addition, though she's been Fon Master for two years, she's never confirmed the contents of the Closed Score herself, partly because she doesn't want to be bound in the way her brother was by hating it so much, and partly because--well, frankly, she's afraid of what she'll find.

She's conversely come to want to avoid killing whenever possible, partly in honor of the role of Fon Master she's come to have thrust upon her. She knows that Ion had been filled with mroe bitterness and anger than pretty much anyone (save Van and the like) knew, thanks to their final conversation...but Tear actually feels sorry for him, and truly wants to do what she can to make the world better. She knows her brother hated the Score and hyperresonance with all his heart, so Tear wants to use her position to have the Score help people, as it's supposed to do. It's the best way, she feels, to pay her respects to Van and to Ion while continuing down her own path. Tear does still have combat training, thanks to Cantabile continuing her training after she became Commander of the Fon Master Guardians, but she only uses her abilities when absolutely necessary--or uses them to heal and support people from the back lines. As a Melodist and Seventh Fonist, she's suited to it anyway. It's thanks to this at least that, despite early controversy surrounding her ascension to the status of Fon Master, she's become actually fairly popular and quite respected over the last two years. However, even in Daath, Tear's influence is limited, and there are a large number of Oracle Knights who listen to Mohs and Legretta instead of her.

But Tear is a believer in the philosophy of, "If you can't do much, then start with what you can do right now," both in canon and in this AU. She trucks along without complaint. Cantabile and Anise both protect her, along with the other Fon Master Guardians--Arietta having been dismissed when she ascended to the position--and she trusts them in a world filled with precious few people she can trust. She's still a stubborn, cautious, suspicious girl with a love for cute things, and she still has a strong sense of duty. Tear's simply had to mature even faster than she did in canon, and as such can sometimes be surprisingly cynical even as she attempts to maintain a positive attitude and work towards her ideals. Of course, this can be also attributed to hanging out with people like Cantabile and Anise...

Largely, though, Tear tends towards hiding her feelings and being kind to people--usually strangers. She wants to be strong, after all, for her own sake. Her agreement to help Emperor Peony of Malkuth set up a peace agreement with Kimlasca was partly motivated by selfish desires: in addition to Malkuth being her home country, Tear wanted to work towards establishing a peace so that another war like the one that destroyed Hod won't occur. Of course, she wholeheartedly doesn't want any innocent civilians to die, but that too is part of Tear's wish to respect her brother. And so she's been traveling with Jade and Anise and Cantabile, despite the interference of Mohs and the God-Generals...

RELATIONSHIPS:

LEGRETTA: After Van's death, Legretta ended up becoming Commandant of the Oracle Knights so that she could continue his plans for a replica world in his memory. Yet, she still cares for Tear, and despite the fact that Tear killed her brother--or perhaps because of it, because originally that was what Legretta was trying to manipulate Tear into doing--she looks out for her former charge. Legretta is one of only two people aside from Tear herself who know of Tear's fratricide, and she frankly doesn't want it getting out. It's her goal to try to convince Tear of the justness of what Van had been doing, and to try to get Tear to agree with their goals. Legretta truly does regret having to try to use and manipulate Tear, who's now Fon Master, as she doesn't want to have to put her in that position--she'll use the seventh Ion replica, now known in the God-Generals as Sitz, whenever possible. Still, Tear is the one who is openly known as Fon Master, and Legretta herself supported this when the situation was still in flux...and as such, she must acknowledge Tear as Fon Master in even the unpleasant ways.

Tear, conversely, has a lot of mixed feelings about Legretta. When she was her student, she hero-worshipped Legretta, and she still cares for her former instructor even now. It's true as well that she feels guilty for killing Van, and wonders sometimes if joining with Legretta would allow her to try to direct things down a less extreme path. However, Tear can't bring herself to fully trust Legretta, even as Legretta does her best to look out for her--because Legretta will use force if need be to keep Tear from doing things she doesn't want her to do, like help Malkuth establish peace with Kimlasca.

CANTABILE: Cantabile was the one who prompted Tear to search out the truth about her brother in the first place, having observed in her a lack of resolve; she was also the one who discovered Fon Master Ion transferring his powers into Tear, then dying in her arms. When she saw the different look in Tear's eyes on that day, Cantabile decided for both their sakes to follow Tear as far as she could, and was the first to present Tear as a successor for the Fon Master to Grand Maestro Mohs. She had no way of knowing that this interfered with Mohs' plans, but he had no choice but to agree to support Tear, and reassigned Cantabile to Commander of the Fon Master Guardians. Cantabile has been working since then to help Tear become stronger and more independent, and while she has a rough mouth, works fiercely to protect her. Cantabile was, after all, originally part of the Fon Master faction.

In return, Tear has come to feel grateful for Cantabile's help and support, even if sometimes the black-haired woman's motivations are a mystery to her. She trusts Cantabile, particularly since when Cantabile found her with Ion, Tear confessed her crime to her steely-eyed--making Cantabile the only other person besides Legretta who knows. She feels like, even if she doesn't know everything about the former God-General, she can depend on her--if not quite rely on her. Reliance is a weakness, which both Legretta and Cantabile taught her. Although Tear's become Fon Master, she still has the instincts of a soldier.

ANISE: When Mohs transferred Cantabile to her post in the Fon Master Guardians, he also transferred in Anise, claiming that the more female guards there were for the new female Fon Master, the better. Anise is instead meant to spy on Tear and Cantabile for him and report everything directly to him. Anise does this...but having befriended Tear and empathizing with her for the loss of her brother, she feels really bad about being a traitor. She protects and supports Tear as best she can, and they have a close, almost sisterly relationship, since they're much closer in age than Tear is with Cantabile. Anise also teases Tear like crazy, but she refrains from doing anything truly hurtful; after all, not only is she the Fon Master, she's also her friend.

Tear feels the same way about Anise--regarding the sisterly bit, anyway. She envies her a little for being so close with her parents when she lost her own as a child, but it's a wistful rather than malicious sort of envy. Tear feels like she can relax and be herself around Anise, and so has come to trust her with her feelings. However, she's never admitted to Anise that she herself was the one who killed Van... It's a painful thing to talk about, after all, and it begs questions for reasons that Tear would rather not spread around.

THIRD PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

Tear lowered the document in her hands to regard the man who'd introduced himself as Colonel Jade Curtiss of Malkuth, kneeling before her. She recognized Emperor Peony's seal, so this definitely was an official document. But the contents of it... She was surprised and wondering and warmly pleased all in one roll of emotion swimming in her chest. Though it wasn't a conscious act on her part, the only part of it she conveyed either to Jade or two the two Fon Master Guardians standing to either side of her was a slight upward curve of her lips. Peace between the ancient enemy countries, initiated by the Emperor of Malkuth himself, when they had been the ones that had lost Hod... She'd heard good things about Emperor Peony, and this, in her opinion, settled it.

"Let me just confirm what it is you want, Colonel: You--or rather, Emperor Peony--wishes for me to serve as a neutral delegate to initiate and oversee this peace treaty proposal between Malkuth and Kimlasca, correct?"

"Correct, Fon Master Mystearica," he replied without moving. "I humbly beseech you."

Tear glanced at Cantabile, to her right, and then Anise, to her left. Cantabile was frowning thoughtfully, as at first she'd been suspicious of the presence of the infamous Necromancer, but she watched her patiently to await her decision. Anise smiled at Tear, but she, too, was unusually serious as she glanced from her charge to the Colonel patiently awaiting his answer. Naturally, this was a serious matter. Tear thought that it would be natural to send this Jade person away and bid him return the next day for her answer; it would be committing herself to a great deal, and she would have to travel in person. She knew Grand Maestro Mohs wouldn't like that--was conversely likely object to it strongly.

But still, the possibility of peace--and Tear knew well that without the Fon Master there to mediate, talks wouldn't even start...

She turned a half-step to gaze back at the altar behind her, at the fore of the chapel within the Church of Lorelei. It had been two years since that day that had changed her life, when she had been changed instantly from a mere Bravo at the bottom of the Oracle Knights to the Fon Master--the supreme leader of the entire Order of Lorelei. Tear's features creased with the memories, and she saw in the corner of her eye Cantabile's frown deepening. She knew she knew...because it was right in front of the altar that Fon Master Ion had died in Tear's arms, imprinting his powers onto her fonons with what she knew now to be a Daathic arte.

"You'll take on this burden..." Ion had murmured. His smile was frozen onto his dying features as his eyes bored into Tear's. "...and perhaps your brother and I will see how well you do from the abyss."

The brunette shut her eyes and shook her head, her free hand closing into a fist. When she turned back to face Jade, she took a step closer to him to offer that hand to him, eyes now open and strong and clear as the midsummer sky.

"I accept," she said firmly. "Colonel Curtiss, I vow on my name as Fon Master that I shall assist Peony IX, Emperor of Malkuth, in securing a peace treaty with the Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear."

"Heh! Well said!" Cantabile said with a grin, folding her arms over her chest. "If that's your order, Fon Master, I'll follow through with you to the end."

"Don't forget about me!" Anise cheered, thrusting a hand straight into the air. "You guys don't really think I'll just stay here where it's all dusty and boring, do you~?"

"Wonderful. Thank you, Fon Master." Jade rose to his feet and accepted her hand with a smile. "On behalf of His Majesty, allow me to express to you the gratitude of Malkuth."

"If I can help bring peace between Kimlasca and Malkuth," Tear replied with a smile in return, "then that's all the thanks I need."
