“Sometimes I wish I was,” Gordon says, “but I’m not. Now, are we gonna talk about what we’re doing tonight or am I excusing myself for a while so you two can talk about Sammy?”
“It’s Sam,” Dean and John say at the same time.
LOVE.
I love how this chapter just raises 100 new questions. I also really like the dynamic developing between Sam and Dean. The Sam-Hunter dynamic is a really interesting new element too.
I also find it fascinating how much more Sam is sitting on the is-he-good-or-is-he-evil fence in this story then in any of the others. Even when he did bad things before, I still KNEW he'd shake out in the end. This time though, I feel much less sure.
Yes, more and more and more questions. I like questions -- for every one that gets answered in the early sections, hundreds more pop up.
The Sam-Hunter dynamic is a really interesting new element too.
I know I touched on this in the latter half of Down Darker and Darker Stairs, but I really enjoy it here as well, this aspect we're seeing a little bit of in Season 2 of canon. There will be more of this dynamic later.
This time though, I feel much less sure.
Good! You're meant to. *Dances around at the thought of things actually working yay!*
1) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I definitely won't mourn Gordon, but the matter-of-fact way in which they got rid of him was chilling.
2) The religious persecution angle on hunters is freaky. yet interesting. But creepy.
3) I kinda wish Dean had taken Pierre on his offer and I feel like a naughty naughty boy for thinking it.
4) Who was riding Theo? There weren't enough clues to guess.
5) I really really really want to know what happens next. Since I figure I'll have to wait, one thing I figured I'd ask is since Dean is also a cheval, who will ride him. My money is on either Ogoun or Shango. Or Erzulie Dantor because he's as passionate as they come.
As always, I can't wait to read more. *tips his hat*
1) I mourned Gordon. A lot. I went back and re-wrote that section about five times because I wanted there to be a way out, or a different thing, something, but in the end, I came back to this. The way it happened was definitely chilling.
2) Freaky, interesting, and creepy. Yes, yes, and yes. Yay!
3) I debated! In the back of my mind, there's, like, this deleted scene where he did, and it's one of the best things to imagine. So please, feel free, because that? Would be hot.
I'm going to reserve answering 4 and 5 for now, but I will say that I love knowing that you're curious and trying to guess -- it reassures me that I'm doing something right with this one.
First of all, there's Gordon. Twisted, twisted and confused Gordon, who I feel kinda sorry for, in this story as well as in canon. He's doing a good thing, but he's going about it in such a bad way, you know? Glad to see that you used him so well for this!
And John! Is it just me, or does John seem to get to know a little bit more about Sam in this story than in the others? At least he knows the kind of things Sam has stepped into, instead of being totally in the dark like he has been in the other stories. I'm not sure yet how that'll play out in the long run, for better or for worse.
And then there's the end, when Dean is giving the Impala some lovin', lol. I love it when Dean talks to his car, calls her 'baby.'
As always, can't wait for more. I'm really getting into this; a lot of things started to make some sense in this chapter, although things are far from clear. *hugs* Thanks for posting!
I love Gordon. I know it's an unpopular opinion or whatever, but I have so much respect for him, for doing what he is and being so strong about it. Not that I think he's right (obviously, I mean, c'mon, he's going after Sam, no way in hell would I be down with that), but he's doing what he thinks needs to be done and he's damn good at it.
John's guessing, but he's a smart hunter, so his guesses are right on. I loved being able to play around with his character during 5D5D, even if it's only for one scene, everything from wanting to go off and find/help Sam to being disappointed in him to knowing that he has gifts to sending Dean off to protect him. John's still a varied character to me, all of these potentialities, and I love the openness that gives me as a fic-writer.
Yay! I so love this series. Love love love. *sigh*. And I love how there is this mutual hatred for Gordon ever since his introductin. That character can never be portrayed as not evil. It just wouldn't be right. Okay, gotta go now, but figured I needed to do my standard squee!
Thanks for the squee! I personally have an unexplainable love for Gordon -- I angsted about killing him off but it needed to be done. Still, the way Gordon and Dean sort of tussle in this one, with John there to referee, I was pleased with the way that came out and what it might say about the Dean&Gordon relationship in canon without John.
In the context of the story, independent of anything else, it doesn't seem like such a monumental thing that Sam kills Gordon, that Sam has killed other hunters, but when I sat back to think about it after the first read-through... Seriously, sweetie, I don't even have words for how amazing this story is, how you keep mounting the tension with every chapter, keep upping the ante, reading this story gives me continuous shivers. I freaking love the OCs, and I absolutely, wildly adore Sam's lifestyle in this... I fear I'm starting to sound repetitious with my feedback, but every chapter just reinforces what I loved from the beginning.
I love that John recognises the charm, I love that like Gordon, he figures it out and then sends Dean to handle it. It just makes John's role feel more active in this story, even though it may not be.
I love that Dean and Sam reconnect in a fundamental, brother way over the Impala, the way they communicate in half-sentences and looks...
I love this especially: Sam rolls his eyes, but he sighs once he
( ... )
Sam's lifestyle, the OCs, the tension -- I'm so glad its all coming together and working. I really wondered whether or not the brother-communication you picked up on would still be there, especially after everything that's happened, the way Sam isn't really Sam anymore, but the more I thought about it, yes. Dean's still Dean, and Sam's still Sam, just older and harder and not so willing to hero-worship his big brother anymore. After eighteen years of wordless communication, I think there are still some vestiges of that left, maybe not in the little things, but the Impala? Not a little thing.
