Letter Opener

Regulus crouched next to his dresser, sorting through a small mound of objects he had brought to Hogwarts this year, yet failed to utilize. His face was expressionless as he sifted through objects before him with pale, dextrous digits. A sealed envelope lay on the floor next to his left knee, unnaturally flat and pristine.

"Where could I have put it?"

Suddenly Black's back straightened and he turned away from the pile, a small metallic object protruding from his encircling fingers. Lifting the envelope with his free hand, he cautiously slid the ornate letter opener under the flap and wedged the waxed-stamped family seal open.

Unfolding the letter his probing fingers discovered inside, Regulus set aside the ceremonial instrument and now purposeless parchment envelope with a lazy flick of the wrist.

His face was impassive as he read the missive, slightly reddened eyes scanning the crampted writing several times over. Carefully he set the letter down upon an open Transfiguration book and pulled himself on to the canopied bed. Regulus' movements were both stiff and uncomfortable as he considered the contents of the text, his mouth turned down slightly in a frown to complement his drawn brows.
