Fanged

The swiftly closing arms of the night were almost comfortable in contrast to the day's scrutiny of sunlight. The shadows had long since lengthened into continual darkness, and yet, the figure of the younger Black remained motionless under the tree he had once conversed with Sabrina by. His keen eyes scanned the dormant grounds, a thin tome upon his ( Read more... )

Sleep had eluded Alice that evening, and being that she had no work to distract her and no one to occupy her time, she had soon found herself strolling about the campus grounds, hoping that the soothing calm of the nature around her might bring peace to her jangled nerves. In the distance she spoted a bright blue light, slightly illuminating the outline of a dark shape.

Curious, Alice walked toward it wondering who could possibly be out at this hour.

The flames danced sluggishly, illuminating the features of Regulus while providing him with the light necessary to continue reading. The slight noises of the approaching student failed to register as Black remained focused on his book.

Alice took out her wand, and meandered closer, careful just in case. "Hello?" she called attempting to peer at the figure only slightly visable in front of her.

Regulus quickly hid the jar with the edge of his cloak and drew his wand, pressing his body flat against the tree trunk. His breathing became quick and shallow as his eyes struggled to scan the surroundings.

Moving the blonde curtain of hair from her face, Alice took a few more steps forward. She hesitated at lighting up her surroundings. What if whatever was out here was scary? She felt the first surges of adenaline lick her consciousness and she took quieter steps, as not to give away her exact presence.

"Are you a student?" she called, lowering her voice slightly.

Regulus weighed his reply for a moment, his back tensed against the living wood. Her voice was definitely both young and feminine to his strained ears... probably under sixth year.

"Of course I'm a student."

Alice relaxed a bit, but her wand never wavered. "Then why are you hiding from me?"

She began to slowly advance in the direction the sound had come from.

Regulus backed away into the forest from the tree, not daring to turn until he was in deeper cover.

"Well, I'm not supposed to be out here, for one thing, and for the other I'd rather not be disturbed."

Alice blinked, well that was at least an honest answer. "Well fine, I guess I won't bother you then," she called into the inky darkness before turning around and walking back toward the castle. The disembodied voice was right, they weren't supposed to be out there, and if this was any omen, Alice should reatreat for the night. Her inate curisoity threatened to take ahold of her, but she managed to tear away from her previous destination, lost deep in thought as she headed back for the Gryffindor common room.

Regulus carefully made his way back to his customary spot as the footsteps grew distant. With a very slight sigh, he returned to reading.
