What is magic?

That intrigues me, I do not know the Haruki Murakami books. Is that the author or protagonist. I think it is very shrewed and perceptive of you. The supernatural was originally used to explain the world around us. It was accepted as just the way things are. People did not understand the way the world worked on its constituent levels, physics, chemistry and meteorology were not advanced enough to explain all these mysterious phenomena. Therefore it could be argued that a good concept of magic is one that does feel like an extension of the world as we know it.

I very seldom find magic to be creepy unless it is in a horror-esque story. One thing I have been enjoying more and more in the stories where magic is usable by humans through spells or what not is the role that symbolism plays in crafting spells. Symbols speak to intent of the caster and represent what is meant to happen. I love the idea that symbols are that powerful.
