I went to see Okuribito (送り人), aka Departures at my town's little Indie film theater this afternoon. I'd watched a trailer for it a few months ago after hearing that it won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, but it had then fallen off my radar, until it startled me by randomly popping up in the paper's movie listings. I'm really glad I got a chance to go see it, because it was awesome.

It's been a long time since I was so moved by a film. There were several bits where practically the whole theater was sniffling. I mean, a lot of the movie was about various funerals so it's not that surprising, but it also managed to be insanely funny in other parts, and the entire story was told with this sort of... heartfelt genuineness that drew me in completely. Plus, the score had tons of awesome cello music - some of it being played by the main character - which is always an instant zap to my Inner Happy Music Place.

In conclusion, go see it! It is an amazing and wonderful movie.
