After a really fun weekend full of going out, etc., i went to the lebanese festival, where it kind of struck me as weird that everyone was partying over the fact that they were all of lebanese descent, but look at lebanon. it's being destroyed right now, and beirut, a booming metropolitan and tourist attraction is in ruins. i'm not sure how i feel about what's going on in the middle east, but i have a feeling that no solution from this will be long-lived. my brother's friend, Ayoub, translated one of the (obnoxiously loud) songs, to which everyone was singing a long, for us, and part of it means:
What have you done to my lebanon?
We will take it back.
Granted, this is an old song and could be easily applied to Israel or Hezbollah in recent times. it just struck me as strange that they were celebrating lebanon, but there's not much left to celebrate.
oh, and when i was out in so buf i ran into a kid who goes to potsdam, too.
and lastly, a favorite little quote that mike miller sent me:
"if you don't think god has a sense of humor, go to wal-mart and look around."
