Ideals really change, Kenshin? I had a conversation with a girl the other day who told me what people wanted in the end was to be happy. All of us... have conflicting ideas of what happiness implies I guess.

Aa... they do. Not the most basic of ideals--but the more complicated ones that always seem to cause the most trouble, they change.

This unworthy one has seen how such ideals are able to change in just thirty years. The Japan we created after bakumatsu is entirely different from the Japan he knew as a boy. Back then, the concept of a sword that protects over a sword that kills would have been laughed at and seen as an impossibility. But now in Meiji? The idea is beginning to be embraced. Perhaps in another ten years the killing sword will be forgotten entirely
