Gabriel's call echoes through the house.
"Are you home?"

"In the den, Gabriel."

"Mother?"

"Guess who I've brought by for a visit," Gabriel says, unnecessarily.

"Simon," she says warmly, and rises to take his hands. "How lovely."
A quick flicker of a glance at Gabriel; he's still smiling, and relaxed.
Not trouble, then. Thank God.

"I can only stay a little while," he says, "but I had some good news I wanted to tell you in person."

Regan squeezes her son's hands slightly, and waits expectantly.
(It's so rare, still, to get good news from her children -- so rare, and a joy, even before she hears what it is.)
