Why did no one tell me that the Outlander series is fucking hilarious?

So that's where I've been, on a whim I went to the library and picked up Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber, mostly because I'd heard about the books before (but praised as a romance! pah! can you not see the hilarity mixed in with the gore, sex, and angst?) and well, I had ( Read more... )

I want to read Freakanomics myself. I read a profile of him in the NY Times magazine section about a year ago and I thought a lot of what he said was fascinating. I was especially intrigued by his linking legal abortion to the drop in crime that occurred 18(?) years later. It seems obvious once it was pointed out. (And no, I don't think it's a racist theory, although many liberals do. Facts in and of themselves do not have a moral slant.)

It's an interesting book, but sometimes the wording is a bit annoying, a bit, uh, smug, I guess.

My sister gave me Outlander years ago hoping to turn me on to romance novels. I loved Outlander (and all the sequels!) because it's so sarcastic and entertaining, and SO not a romance novel! I adore Lord John to bits and pieces! She wrote a 'mystery' novel where he is the main character (shocking since it's called "Lord John and the Private Matter) which was amusing as well, and the next J/C installment - A Breath of Snow and Ashes - comes out @ September 27. :) I know exactly what you mean about Claire knowing everything, but, eh, it's one of the quirks. Either you accept it or you hate the books. Maybe I'm just used to it. After all, I've seen worse marysueisms. Still, her surgery on Mr. Myers nearly had me peeing in my pants. :)

Feel better!!

Oh, the next book is coming out next month? I didn't even know, I thought it took several years for her to write each one and that it would be a while before the next one.

Anyway, my problem is that I adore Roger and like Brianna, so when it goes to the Claire POV, I go into hyperfast reading mode so that I don't have to constantly snark whilst reading of her medical glories in the 18th century.

Claire's POV doesn't bother me so much because I don't really identify with her. So while I was a bit... annoyed with how ridiculous she was in Outlander when they first returned to Leoch after they were wed (the jealousy over Laoghaire), I wasn't all indignant and self-absorbed with thinking that "I would never have acted that way!"

The thing that amazes me is how she is able to keep track of the gazillion minor characters that she's introduced, and make them feel like they're really part of the story - with their own stories, not just thrown in as filler. I love Lord John and Colum and Ian (both of them!) and Geillis and Master Raymond and Murtagh and the slyness of Lord Lovat and Joe Abernathy... And it really is a fun story!

I adore Roger as well!

It does take several years for her to write each book. Fiery Cross came out in 2001!

I would never consider Gabaldon as a romance writer though I suppose the main theme of the book, ie Jamie and Claire, does centre on love. It's a great series and with book six coming out this year, I might have to re-read them all again. What's Freakanomics about?

Freakanomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything is a book by this economist who asks questions that are strange and compelling. Such as what schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common. And what's more dangerous to a child - a swimming pool or a gun?

It's a intersting read, although I was a bit tetchy over some of the wording.

I heard you once were planning on writing the angstiest fic ever. Did it ever materialize? If so, what fandom is it, and may I have a link?

Thanks.
