i'm sure you'd need either:
a) a 10m long ruler
or
b) a really precise, sharp knife
for it to work. you'd need to drag it across the string pretty fast, regardless!

I don't intend for it to be a very precise excercise, I figure that with a 30cm ruler if I use the middle 15cm I could get some interesting sounds,

it'd sound like a saw, but I could do some simple dynamics with the speed/sound by spacing the grooves and heights of the groove,
