Marine from Darby killed in Iraq A 20-year-old Darby Marine was killed Sunday in Iraq by a sniper bullet, officials confirmed Tuesday.
Jeremy Scott Sandvick Monroe was shipped off for his first tour in Iraq last month, according to his father, Monte Monroe. Two Marines knocked on the Monroes' door Sunday afternoon with the news.
"We had a knock on the door, and two Marines were standing there," said Dana Monroe, Jeremy's step-mother. "I knew what they were there for."
According to the Monroes, their son and two other Marines were in combat in the Anbar Province when a sniper coming toward them in a vehicle delivered the fatal shot. Lance Cpl. Monroe was shot in the head Sunday afternoon in Iraq - at about 2 a.m. in Montana.
The other two Marines weren't injured, Dana Monroe said.
One of the insurgents was killed in the encounter and another injured, Monte Monroe said.
Jeremy Monroe grew up in Darby from third grade to his freshman year in high school, when he went to Chinook to live with his mother, Mellissa Pike.
He enlisted in the Marines in high school and left for boot camp the day he graduated in 2004. He did one tour in Afghanistan before heading to Iraq about a month ago.
"I'm very proud of my son," Monte Monroe said.
Monroe said he expects his son's body to arrive in the United States Tuesday and services are being planned in Chinook. Full military honors are planned for the Marine from the Fourth Platoon of the 23rd Echo Company.
