Hi, this is Mary Winchester. I can't come to the phone right now, so leave a message after the beep and I'll get back to you just as soon as I can. Thanks!

[Pause.]

...Beep.

[Yes, she said the word "beep." Don't sass.]

[Hey Mary, here's your son calling. The older and more attractive one, of course.]

[She still always sounds bemused when she first answers. It's hard to get over a Star Trek communicator ringing in your purse.]

Hello?

Hey Mom. It's Dean.

Hey, Dean. [She sounds a little tired, but nothing bad.] How's it going?

Just wanted to check up on you. [Pause.]

Were you out tonight? [His tone betrays a little of how not happy he is with that whole greeter at night thing.]

[What the heck ever, she's kind of done with people trying to be her knights in shining flannel. In fairness to the boys, none of them are really functioning people.]

Just got back, actually.

[And pop goes the cork on a new bottle of wine.]

[He lets out a breath and rolls his eyes exasperatedly, not that she can see it. But he can't really talk, because he goes out at night and does his own personal patrol without telling anyone. Especially lately. But it's not the same, dammit.]

Can't you stick to daytime greeting? I bet the newcomers look just as lost and needy during the day. Even more so with better lighting. You'd love it. [His tone is not cutting, he can't be truly sarcastic with his Mom, it's not in him.]

Sweetie, that's what the Greeters who aren't packing are for.

[That earns an amused snort.] Yeah well. Packing or not, you're still my Mom.

[There's an unsaid "It's my job to protect you," in there.]

[She can hear it, unsaid or no.]

I know. I'll be okay. Are you upstairs?

[He lets out a breath, letting the subject change.] Yeah. Was gonna head out soon. You want me to drop by?

[Since sleep has evaded him this night, hence the reason he's up unusually early, he thought he'd go find a way to make a quick buck somewhere. And then go drinking. But checking on Mary is his first priority right now.]

Yeah. Someone has to make sure you have something other than Funyuns for breakfast.

[A pause and he stops himself from opening a bag of potato chips. Then he clears his throat.]

Oh, come on. I'm not that bad. [>_> awkward.]

[Beat.

She just laughs.]

Get down here, you. I'm making pancakes.

Sounds great. See you soon. [And he hangs up.

Then a couple minutes later, there's a knock on the door.]

[She answers it holding a spoon covered in batter.]

You really don't have to knock. I'm getting you both keys.
