The Romance Novel

Hi there! Dusting off Reflectology for my first post. I hope I can keep up the standard of the reflectors before me!

Today I bought my first Mills & Boon book.
I've never had the slightest interest in reading them before, not for any particular reason, just didn't. But about 2 months ago I started working in books, which I love. Unpacking and shelving daily forces you to start looking at each series, each book...and each romance novel.

I don't pretend to know the awesome pastime of the inexpensive romance novel, but from the covers and blurbs, here's what I've come to understand about them.

Mills and Boon and Harlequin have series such as Regency, Medical, Desire, Blaze, Romance, Intrigue, Blush and Sexy. I like how they they make sure you know exactly what you're buying. I wouldn't want to be forced into a blush when I so desired a medical story.
The Sexy and Desire books have mostly red covers and every single one has some handsome couple, necking in low light in the office, bra strap down and a light breeze from no known source, blowing them to the point of whimsy. It's kind of amazing how many there are but they all look the same. I'd like to suggest some variety to their art department.

Sadly, I haven't seen any pirates and wenches, pirates must be out because vampires are in.(There must be an unspoken rule that the two cannot co-exist in one publishing house).
The vampire stories feature a cover with a handsome face filling the frame, chiselled jawline, 3 day growth and supernatural bedroom eyes. Or there's your ultra buffed and oiled savior vampire with fiery backlight, that would be your 'Nocturne' series.

The popular ones of the moment seem to be medical, or 'perfect daddy' type stories and if you can get two in one (Emergency: Wife Needed) then you're all set. Bonus if he's a millionaire, there seems to be a lot of those too.

Then in November they bring out the Christmas themed books in each section like 'Mistletoe Manouvers' 'The Midwife's Christmas Miracle' and my favourite 'A Cowboy for Christmas'. These all have a Christmas cover, some with a cute young couple in the snow wearing hand knitted jumpers (Blush), another starring, yet again a couple necking in the office, but this time it's the Christmas party so they are naturally under some kind bough or wreath bringing festive cheer and good loving.

It is here where I came across the book I ended up buying. It was a medical drama, starring a ridiculously cute blue eyed baby in a santa hat. This cuteness coupled with my just having finished my last book and waiting to open a book that is a Christmas gift, I need a 2 week quick read.

So here I am, ready to embark on my first M & B babyfic romance novel. If you have any thoughts or advice, favourites to recommend to the group (whether it be because they are so bad, so good or so hilarious) please share. I love hearing about it, just for the names alone.

Speaking of which "Hancuffed to the Sheikh". Lol forever :)

Thanks for reading, if you made it this far.
