Kirihara Akaya - "I'll Crush You!" Author: assyrian Fandom: Prince of Tennis E-mail: rainsong_eilyr at yahoo dot com Wordcount: About 2400 words. Spoilers: spoilers for a lot of storyline. WARNING: Image-heavy.
Another note about anime!Kirhara is that he seriously has something wrong in his head, like a disorder that goes beyond his freaky red-eye mode -- I don't know if it's schizophrenia or paranoia or what, but he gets his own little disembodied demon head that floats on a black background and mocks him. I think he's finally able to suppress it during his match with Ryoma at Senbatsu? (And I think that's what caused him to fall down the stairs... Ann was all, "he started freaking out at nothing!" and I can't remember if she was just lying to try and save her own hide.)
ahaha /pointless babble
Great essay! It's heartbreaking interesting to see how he goes from the cute little elf to something more violent and vicious. Damn, and he used to be so adorable...
yeah, and the anime redemption showed that he could be honourable. He disses Tachibana, An gets mad, he falls down the stairs backing away from her and then he won't tell how it happened, though there are accusations of kamio (while kamio does a marvellous little jig of his own protesting his innocence) and so on and so forth. he won't say who was involved, because it was an. until ryoma (!!! :( ) finds out and an tells all (!! it was a real OOC episode for an). and then ryoma and kirihara play a match without red eyes (which was very annoying in that ryoma has to go and be the hero bringing out the good in our anti-hero).
Ok, but that is a really poor summary. it's just for your information. i was happy at the fact that they did redeem him, but i hated some parts of it. all that OOC. -_-
Yay, Kirihara! ... That's really about all I can say to this, as you are the authority on all things Kiri. Good essay.
Actually, one thing: I was under the impression that "second-year ace" wasn't so much a nickname as kind of a description. He's a second year, and he's good enough to play singles on a regular basis, so he's an ace. Don't they call Ryoma a first-year ace at some point? It doesn't really matter, but that would explain why he and Tachibana both got called that, since Tachibana was good as a second-year too.
Thanks! I think my faint obsession gives me a rather biased outlook, but all the same.
With Kirihara, he's called second-year ace quite consistently: Inoue-san calls him that in Genius 15, he calls himself that in Genius 19, Fuji calls him that in Genius 185, and I'm pretty sure there at at least two other instances of it in the manga. Somewhat akin to the way Ryoma and the Troika are called tensai at various points too, but they aren't identified with the title the way Fuji is.
I can't remember how often Tachibana is called Shishigaku's 2nd-year-ace, but you're right that it might simply be something to do with being a nationally-ranked player in your second year. *grin* But I'm keen to fine Kirihara-Tachibana parallels, alas.
True, but Oshitari's called a tensai too, and I don't really see much parallel between him and Fuji. I guess it's just that Kirihara is one of the best second-year players out there, and he even compares favorably to the rest of his team (sort of), so he gets to be called an ace. Or something.
I don't know anything about Tachibana's background except what I've picked up from fic and discussions (since I don't think it's in the anime), so I'm going to assume you're right about the parallels. Interesting, since they seem so different now.
