Lack of sleep and improper meals are becoming increasingly common in Kim Junmyeon’s life. He cannot remember the last time when he had gone to bed early or sat down together with his family for dinner. Nowadays, he survives through his day on a couple of hours of sleep and a quick bite from the refrigerator. Junmyeon blames himself for taking part in a lot of co-curricular activities. As if joining the student council is not stressful enough. Not to mention, there are many school projects and homework that demand his attention. The stress of high school is taking a toll on Junmyeon and he figures that it is going to be a matter of time before he officially cracks under pressure.

Just like every school morning, Junmyeon takes the 5 a.m. train so that he would arrive in school on time for the daily student council meeting. Since it is during peak hour, the train is always very crowded. Sometimes, Junmyeon would have to wait for the next train simply because it is too packed with people. So, Junmyeon would always make it a point to squeeze inside the train even if it means being squished against the crowd of people. He needs to get to school early no matter what even when he arrives at his station looking like a flat pancake.

‘Everyone is squished together like a pack of canned sardines,’ Junmyeon laughs to himself at his own joke. It was a pretty lame joke but he has to entertain himself for at least three more stops.
This is when he notices him for the first time.
A strong smell of tuna fills the air. Junmyeon whips his head around to find its source because the smell is really bothering him. Who on Earth would think it is a good idea to bring stinky tuna into a morning train? He then sees a boy munching from his tuna sandwich which is wrapped neatly with saran wrap. The boy is wearing the same high school uniform as him. For the next three stops, Junmyeon finds himself glaring at the boy.
-
Every morning, while taking the train, Junmyeon keeps noticing the boy every single time. They would both enter the same train cabin. They would both be within five feet away from each other. And every day without fail, the boy would be munching noisily on his breakfast which is usually a tuna sandwich.

Junmyeon gives the boy a nickname. Tuna Sandwich Boy.

Not an original name but hey, Junmyeon is too sleepy and hungry in the mornings to come up with a creative name that would make jaws drops. Tuna Sandwich Boy will do.
At first, Junmyeon finds Tuna Sandwich Boy annoying. Morning after morning, Tuna Sandwich Boy would chew on his trademark tuna sandwich noisily that drives Junmyeon insane. Especially when Junmyeon spent the night before staying up late cramming for tests. However, Junmyeon soon realizes that he is not annoyed because the boy was munching on his food noisily. In fact, the boy was actually chewing on his food quietly but because they stood so close to each other, the boy might as well be scratching his nails on a chalkboard. No. It is because Junmyeon was starving himself.

Junmyeon has to be content with the fact that he only has toast for breakfast before he leaves his house everything. Sometimes, it is not even the full toast. He would only have three small bites before bailing out. So, in an attempt to distract himself from his grumbling stomach, Junmyeon shifts his attention from the boy’s sandwich to the boy’s face itself. The boy has a pair of huge eyes that resembles that of an owl. He has the finest pair of eyebrows that Junmyeon has ever seen. So full and thick. And he has plump lips that would bloom into a beautiful heart-shaped smile. Junmyeon closes his eyes. He imagines what it feels to be kissing those luscious pair of lips. It must be soft like velvet and silk-

A deafening sound snaps Junmyeon out of his daydream.

Eyes snapping wide open, Junmyeon involuntarily lets out a horrific scream. His cheeks flush to the colour of scarlet when he realizes that the sound meant that the train has arrived at the next station. Junmyeon focuses his gaze at the floor, avoiding the judging looks from other commuters. He fails to notice Tuna Sandwich Boy staring at him with his lips curling into the heart-shaped smile that he loves so much.

-

As Junmyeon is walking towards to the bookshop to print some fliers with his co-student council member Minseok, he hears loud yells from the main square. He whips his head around to see a group of people adopting the same stance. Junmyeon zeroes in on the only person he recognizes from the group. Tuna Sandwich Boy.

“It’s the judo club,” Junmyeon turns his head to see Minseok smiling at him. “They’re preparing for the inter-school judo competition. They’re going up against their rival school in their next round and they don’t want a repeat of last year where they lost the gold to them.”

Junmyeon hums in response and shifts his attention back to the judo club. He notices that Tuna Sandwich Boy is standing at the front and deduces that Tuna Sandwich Boy is leading the judo club. Maybe this is why Tuna Sandwich Boy goes to school as early as him. The judo club needs to practise every day if they want to grab the gold.

Junmyeon stares a little longer than he should have when Minseok calls his name.

As Junmyeon jogs up to Minseok, the latter raises a quizzical eyebrow, “Do you know anyone from the judo club?”

Junmyeon smiles as he shakes his head no. As the pair is walking towards the bookshop, Junmyeon fails to notice a pair of owl eyes staring at his general direction. A heart-shaped smile is directed at the oblivious student council member.

-

Junmyeon has barely entered the morning train when an impatient salaryman rushes to enter the train before the doors completely close on him. In doing so, the salaryman unintentionally shoves Junmyeon, causing the latter to drop the stack of books that he is holding. The books fall and scatter across the floor in front of a person standing next to him.

Sighing in annoyance, Junmyeon kneels down as much as he can with the crowd around him to pick up his books when two hands beat him to it and hand the stack of books to Junmyeon.

“Oh thank you,” Junmyeon mutters and his voice gets caught in his throat when he looks up to see who helped him.

“You’re welcome.”

Who knew Tuna Sandwich Boy has such a deep and sexy voice?

A blush involuntarily creeps into Junmyeon’s cheeks as he quickly averts his gaze. Junmyeon barely has a minute to maintain his composure when the train abruptly stops. Junmyeon makes sure to cling tightly to his books, not wanting to drop them a second time. However, his feet start to stumble and a hand snakes around his waist to grab it tightly to prevent him from falling.

“Thanks,” Junmyeon mutters once again and notices that it is Tuna Sandwich Boy helping him out yet again.

“Be careful, alright?”

Junmyeon nods weakly as he feels his entire face redden, probably resembling a tomato right now.

Even when they are standing next to each other, Junmyeon misses the heart-shaped smile that is directed at him.

-

With barely two hours of sleep and an empty stomach, Junmyeon struggles to stand up on his morning train. For the first time ever in his whole entire life, Junmyeon overslept. In the night before, he had spent his time finishing on all of his homework that are all due today. So, he had only gone to sleep at 2 a.m. When he woke up and found out that it was already 20 minutes past his alarm, he jolted awake and rushed to school without having any breakfast.

Junmyeon notices his own reflection in the glass pane of the train door. His face is deathly pale and his cheeks are sunken. There are unpleasant-looking eye bags under his eyes and his lips are chapped and dry. He looks horrible.

His stomach rumbles loudly, sounding like an incipiently active volcano. Junmyeon shuts his eyes tightly, trying to ignore the pangs of hunger. He feels a nudge and he opens his eyes to see Tuna Sandwich Boy handing half of his tuna sandwich to him.

Unable to find the strength in him to refuse, Junmyeon hastily accepts the sandwich and shoves it inside his mouth. Even though it is only a small portion of food, he feels satiated for now. Junmyeon gives a grateful smile to Tuna Sandwich Boy who reciprocates with his heart-shaped smile.

Junmyeon feels a painful kick in his gut and he is certain that it is not the feeling of hunger this time.

-

“Two laps around the field! Go go go!” Mr. Park, their physical education teacher, roars, his deep voice sending shivers up his students’ spines. They know better than to complain. If they had, Mr. Park would have multiplied the number of laps and that would eat into their recess time.

Junmyeon pants heavily as he trudges the track. His feet feel so heavy as if he is taking every step through quicksand. His head feels giddy and heavy. Not to mention, there is an awful taste in his mouth that he cannot seem to get rid of all morning.

“Hey Junmyeon, are you feeling alright? You look a little pale,” his classmate Yixing, asks out of concern.

“I’m fine. No need to worry about me,” Junmyeon forces a smile.

Two more heavy steps and Junmyeon stops abruptly to lurch the contents of his stomach. He can hear the loud gasps of horror and disgust from his classmates.

“What’s going on here?” Mr. Park comes jogging after them when he hears the commotion. “Oh dear. Can someone send Junmyeon to the sick bay? Yixing?”

“Yes, sir,” Yixing places Junmyeon’s arm around his shoulder to support his friend as they walk to the sick bay.

-

“Yixing, it’s fine. You can go back to class,” Junmyeon says softly. He is currently lying on a bed in the sick bay. Even though he already feels better, he wants to lie on the comfy bed for a while longer.

“Okay then,” Yixing sighs before standing up. “I’ll come back after Chemistry lesson to check up on you, okay?”

Junmyeon nods and releases a sigh of relief when Yixing has left for good. Yixing is a really good friend. Loyal and kind. But he can be a real worrywart at times.

Junmyeon pulls the blanket to his nose and takes a huge whiff. Lavender. Junmyeon smiles in satisfaction. He secretly hopes that there would not be any more unwell students entering the sick bay because he does not want to give up this heavenly bed. If he could, Junmyeon wants to stay there forever.

“Are you kidding me?”

Junmyeon whips his head around in search of the shout. He feels that it is coming from the bed hidden behind blue curtains. He pulls the curtains aside and his eyes widen at the person who is sitting down on the bed.

“Sure, mom. I’ll be alert next time. Bye,” the person sighs heavily before he looks up and spots Junmyeon. “Oh hey! You’re here too?”

Junmyeon blushes as he hears the sexy, deep voice again. He nods. “I vomited at the track just now.”

Tuna Sandwich Boy pales when he hears that. He springs up from his seat and bows apologetically. “I’m so sorry! It’s all my fault! The tuna that I used for the sandwich has been expired for weeks!”

“Hey, it’s okay! You don’t have to be so formal about it!” Junmyeon assures the other.

“No really. I feel bad. I just didn’t want you to feel hungry and I ended up making you feel worse,” Tuna Sandwich Boy rubs his neck sheepishly.

Junmyeon laughs out loud. “It’s okay really! Thanks to you, I get to skip a couple of lessons!”

Tuna Sandwich Boy joins in his laughter before they quieten down, realizing that the nurse might hear them and send them back to class.

“Hey, my name is Do Kyungsoo.”

Tuna Sandwich Boy now has a name, much to Junmyeon’s delight.

“My name is Kim Junmyeon,” Junmyeon accepts the hand and shakes it.

“I know,” Kyungsoo smiles before blushing.

“I mean I know your name because of your introduction as a student council elect last year. You know when students who want to be part of the student council had to tell their names and give an opening liner to persuade the student body to vote for them. You said something inspirational that time and your words really touched me,” Kyungsoo hastily explains.

“You remembered?” Junmyeon is shocked. The other student council elects showcased their talents like singing or dancing or juggling to create a strong first impression in front of the student body. Meanwhile, Junmyeon chose to say simple words instead and did not think he created a strong impression.

Kyungsoo nods.

“Hello guys. My name is Kim Junmyeon. And I’d like to share some thoughtful words from my favourite philosopher Lao Tzu. ‘Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.’ This quote rings true to me because I believe that self-awareness is key to unleashing our full potential. Yes, we all must have goals and dreams. However, we must be aware of our own limits and strengths so that we won’t make unrealistic expectations of ourselves. And even if we fail, we can still figure out our mistakes so that we won’t repeat them. I hope this will help you inspire all of you and that you will work to make every day count. Thank you and have a great day.”

“At that time, I was beating myself up because I caused my judo team from middle school to lose. I was leading our team in a competition and we lost. I blamed myself for our loss and swore not to take up judo ever again. When you said those words, I realized something. I realized that I have overestimated my own strength and underestimated my rival’s skills. I thought too highly on my own judo skills. And most importantly, I shut myself out from the rest of the club when we lost. I didn’t want to join the judo club in high school because I was afraid to fail again. So, because of our words, I decide to do judo again and aim for success with realistic expectations.”

“Really?” Junmyeon is still stunned to know that his words changed someone’s life.

“Actually, no. It was my parents who persuade me to take up judo in high school because they don’t want me to forget what I learnt in case I need it for self-defence. But your words help too!” Kyungsoo insists.

Junmyeon laughs. “You’re really cute, Tuna Sandwich Boy!”

When he notices his slip-up, Junmyeon quickly covers his mouth. Too late. Kyungsoo is now giving him an evil smirk.

“And to be honest, I remembered your name because I find you cute. And when I found out that you took the same train as me, I was delighted but I couldn’t find the opportunity to talk to you…until now,” Kyungsoo admits.

Junmyeon feels his face redden rapidly.

“So, Kim Junmyeon, do you want to go out with Tuna Sandwich Boy?”
